Elden Ring Nightreign adds several new gameplay mechanics when compared to the original. However, it also keeps many of the things unchanged. One of the mechanics that makes a comeback in the latest entry is the ability to guard counter. For the uninitiated, the guard counter ability made many heavy weapon builds especially deadly in the original Elden Ring. And you can achieve a similar effect in this game too.

So, with that in mind, here is a guide that’ll help you master the guard counter in Elden Ring Nightreign.

As the name of the move might suggest, a guard counter is a counterattack that you perform right after guarding an attack from an enemy. So, you’ll need a sturdy weapon or a shield to pull this move off properly. The correct timing is also crucial. Essentially, you need to click the attack button right after blocking an incoming strike. A special sound plays if you’re able to time it correctly and hit back at foes with a powerful strike.

The guard counter move is highly useful because it always does more damage than the equipped weapon’s light attack. Also, it usually deals even more damage than the weapon’s heavy attack while being much faster. With it, you can easily stance-break enemies and open them up for devastating critical strikes.

Essentially, all characters in the game can use the guard counter move. However, some of them are better at it than others. For instance, the Executor and Guardian characters can take particular advantage of this move.

As an Executor, you’ll be equipped with a cursed katana. With every deflection, you’ll build up power to finally unleash a lunging attack. However, you can make the character even deadlier by trying to use the guard counter after each deflection. So, even when you’re playing defensively, you’ll deal plenty of stance damage to foes. You can improve on the guard counter effect further by slotting in certain relics. And that’s a great choice when playing as an Executor.

The Guardian character begins expeditions with a greatshield, which already shows their defensive approach to battles. The greatshield uses the least amount of stamina for blocking attacks, making the Guardian class perfect for guard counters. You can do some heavy stance damage by simply mastering the timing for the guard counters with this character.
