Elden Ring Nightreign is the latest major title released by FromSoftware and Bandai Namco. With the massive hype surrounding the game, players expected very positive reviews on its launch on Steam. However, as of now, Elden Ring Nightreign is receiving mixed reviews, which encompass both positive and negative feedback.
But why does Elden Ring Nightreign have mixed reviews at launch? Here are five reasons why.

No Duo Mode in Elden Ring Nightreign

Elden Ring Nightreign is a multiplayer-focused roguelike game where you play as a Nightfarer, aiming to defeat the Nightlord at the end of each expedition or run. However, you can only start the expedition solo or as part of a team of three. Therefore, if you are playing with one of your friends, there is no way to team up with just them.
The game forces a third random player into the team during matchmaking, which often detracts from the expedition experience. This can simply stem from the third player’s lack of experience with such games. The absence of a Duo Mode is one of the key reasons for Elden Ring Nightreign’s mixed reviews.
Unbalanced Solo Expeditions

As mentioned earlier, Elden Ring Nightreign allows for either solo or team expeditions. However, currently, solo expeditions are completely unbalanced. The game presents that enemies are easier to defeat, and runs are balanced for solo play; however, the enemies hit hard, and leveling up is significantly more challenging. These issues make solo mode nearly unplayable.
Fortunately, the developers have listened to the community and promised an upcoming update that will rework solo mode, making it much more player-friendly.
No Cross-Play Support

Another major reason for the mixed reviews is that Elden Ring Nightreign lacks cross-play support. In other words, if your friend plays on a console, you cannot join them if you have the game on PC. Given the game’s popularity, it boasts a massive player base on both console and PC. Therefore, the absence of cross-play support prevents friends from playing together.
No Voice Communication

Despite being a multiplayer co-op title, Elden Ring Nightreign does not include a voice chat function. The gameplay of Nightreign is relatively complex, and when playing with strangers, communication is reduced to simple pings. During combat, focusing on both the enemy and the pings can be quite challenging. This lack of effective communication contributes to the mixed reviews on Steam.
Lack of Basic Descriptions

As Elden Ring Nightreign is a stand-alone title, there is no requirement to play the base Elden Ring. However, newcomers to Nightreign are getting confused about various gameplay mechanics. For example:
- Passive System: Weapons picked up have additional passive effects that remain activated throughout the game. You don’t even have to wield the weapons; just having them in your inventory suffices. This informations is not shown or explained directly to the player.
- Structure and Icons: At the start of an expedition, there is no explanation regarding the functions of different structures or the meanings of most map icons. Due to the game’s complexity, players struggle to understand how things operate.
Due to the lack of various indicators, players are expressing that the game feels almost like a randomizer. Most occurrences seem to happen randomly, with no clear meaning or timing.
