Read on to know how FromSoftware’s Elden Ring Nightreign shares commonalities with Epic Games’ famous title, Fortnite.

If you told someone that FromSoftware would make a Fortnite-esque game, they’d think you’re lying. It’s unbelievable that we got a part Fortnite, part Elden Ring game before GTA 6. In Elden Ring Nightreign, each match starts with you dropping into the map while using magical birds as gliders. Where have we seen that before? Jokes aside, Nightreign is more similar to Fortnite’s Save the World mode than the battle royale.
For someone who’s been living under a rock recently, we’ll go over the striking similarities and differences between the two games. A few glaring differences that Elden Ring Nightreign doesn’t feature are a battle pass, micro transactions, or any live service elements like Fortnite. With the obvious out of the way, let’s get into the meat of the topic and discuss the similarities and differences of the two.
Similarities in Elden Ring Nightreign and Fortnite
1) Elden Ring Nightreign Is PvE, Just Like Fortnite’s Save the World Mode
For the uninitiated, Fortnite’s Save The World mode has players surviving through days and nights fighting zombies. On the other hand, Nightreign focuses on players surviving three days as players prepare themselves to fight bosses from the Elden Ring at night. Teamwork is a key part of Nightreign, as the game gets easier when played as a trio. More hands on deck, right? To get back to the point, both games have the PvE element as the core gameplay. The only thing that differs here is what level of torture you can handle, weak zombies or omnipotent demigods.
2) Play Circle That Gradually Closes In
Both Nightreign and Fortnite (BR) matches start out with a play circle or a metaphorical storm that closes in as the match goes on. This pushes players into a tough spot by forcing them to move and fight. This type of circle is a staple mechanic in battle royales like Fortnite, Call of Duty: Warzone, Apex Legends, and even PUBG. However, this closing circle mechanic still doesn’t make Elden Ring Nightreign a battle royale, as it’s a PvE soulsborne experience. The team at FromSoftware has truly transcended genres with the release of Elden Ring Nightreign.
Differences in Elden Ring Nightreign and Fortnite
1) Solo or Trio, No Duos or Squads (As of Yet)
Elden Ring Nightreign currently has only solo and trio modes as of the time of writing. Fortnite, on the other hand, is known for its team-up modes like duo, trio, and squads. It’s not yet confirmed if FromSoftware will add these modes to Nightreign soon. If the community is vocal enough to demand these modes, maybe the developer will consider it. As teaming up with other players is the most fun way of beating Souls bosses, but it’s a personal opinion. As someone who likes co-op play, duos and squads should be a feature in Elden Ring Nightreign.
2) Fun and Wacky Seasonal Content
As the entire gaming community agrees, Fortnite is the “Smash Bros.” of pop culture. The battle royale has partnered with everything from Marvel to other franchises like Fox’s Alien and Xbox’s Halo. These partnerships add various cosmetics like skins, emotes, and item skins to the game. As Nightreign is tethered to the soulsborne universe, it wouldn’t be a wise move to incorporate other franchises in the game. This results in less diversity of upcoming content for Nightreign. The game, at the time of writing, relies on its rogue-like nature to keep things fresh.
3) The Nature of In-Game Difficulty
Both games differ a lot when it comes to the nature of the in-game difficulty that players have to deal with. While Fortnite’s (BR) difficulty is purely skill-based, Nightreign’s difficulty is based on the level of enemies that gamers face. When it comes to Fortnite’s Save the World mode, the difficulty is minimal and only gets spiked as gameplay progresses. To say, both games are a universe apart when it comes to their genre and nature. The only thing that unites them is the fun of teaming up with friends to face the unknown.
Nightreign is now available on PS4/PS5, Xbox One/Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
