Uncover the mystery of Trace of Night and learn how it actually works in FromSoftware’s Elden Ring Nightreign.

Elden Ring Nightreign blends rogue-like mechanics with the traditional FromSoftware’s souls-like formula. Due to the game’s rogue-like nature, you will lose all your progression at the end of each expedition. However, despite the items and map reset, you will retain some of the key items you obtained during your runs.
One such key item is the Trace of Night, which can be obtained by defeating the Nightlords. The item often leaves the players bewildered, wondering what it is and how it actually functions. Here is everything you need to know about Trace of Night in Elden Ring Nightreign.

What Is Trace of Night and How It Works in Elden Ring Nightreign?

You will obtain the Trace of Night by defeating Nightlords. You will find the item in the inventory under the key Item section. However, you will only have one Trace of Night in your inventory, regardless of how many Nightlords you defeat. Each time you defeat a Nightlord, the item merges with your existing Trace of Night and adds a charge to it. However, this process happens covertly behind the scenes without any notification.
The primary function of the Trace of Night is to unlock the eighth and final expedition—Night Aspect. ‘The light dimly reveals the contourse – of a greater being that lies beyond the Nightlord’–a part from the Trace of Night’s description subtly hints about its purpose.
You must defeat four Nightlords to encounter Heolstor, the Nightlord, at the final expedition. While this functions more like other expeditions, defeating Heolstor marks the end of the game and triggers the credits.
Since the Gladius, Beast of Night from the Tricephalos expedition, serves as the default first Nightlord, you need to defeat any three from the remaining six to unlock the final expedition. By defeating four Nightlords, your Trace of Night acquires 4 charges and unlocks access to the Night Aspect expedition.
However, defeating a Nightlord for the second time doesn’t reward you with another Trace of Night. You can check how many Nightlords you have defeated by accessing the Target tab at the Expedition menu.
