Wondering if you need to play Undertale before Deltarune? Here’s how the two games connect—and what that means.
Deltarune is a turn-based indie RPG with pixel graphics and bullet hell combat mechanics. Developed by Toby Fox, Deltarune is a spin-off of its universally acclaimed predecessor, Undertale.
The episodic story follows multiple characters and continues Undertale’s trend of subverting expectations and breaking the mold when it comes to storytelling and gameplay mechanics. For new players looking to enter the universe created by Toby Fox, Undertale’s relevance to Deltarune’s story comes into question.
How Does Deltarune Relate To Undertale?
The world of Deltarune is different from the world of Undertale. Deltarune’s storyline runs parallel to Undertale’s, before the events of the 2015 title. However, the two games are not part of the same continuity. Regardless of the ending you choose in Deltarune, the world of Undertale will remain unaffected by it.
That being said, a few of the original title’s characters make an appearance in Deltarune, including Toriel and Sans. However, most of the main cast are new and not a part of Undertale. Despite being set in an earlier time, there are no spoilers for Undertale in Deltarune. Since they are set in separate, self-contained worlds, you can play Deltarune first and get into Undertale later if you enjoy the story and gameplay.
On the other hand, there will be several Undertale jokes and references throughout the story of Deltarune, which you may not get. The 2015 game provides some context for the episodic story of Deltarune, which you may miss out on without having played its predecessor.
In short, if you wish to understand Deltarune’s minor story points and references fully, you should play Undertale first. In the words of Toby Fox himself, “(Deltarune is) just a game you can play after you complete Undertale.” However, you can still enjoy the episodic story of Deltarune first if you wish to, without missing out on too much. Just know that the game is essentially meant for Undertale lovers coming back for seconds.
