Misty’s Gyarados is a card that gains power from all the other cards that are designated as Misty’s Pokemon. Therefore, as a single Prize attacker, this card can be used to decent effect in the current TCG meta. However, like all decks that are focused on discard tactics, a Misty’s Gyarados deck may run into trouble if the correct cards are not available near the late game. Especially if there are no options in the player’s hand to retrieve discarded cards.

Misty’s Gyarados decks are built around enabling the titular Misty’s Gyarados to KO the opposing Active Pokemon with its move Splashing Panic. This move costs a single Water Energy. It requires players to discard the top 7 cards of their deck. Splashing Panic does 70 damage for each of Misty’s Pokemon discarded this way.

While it’s highly unlikely that Splashing Panic will deal the maximum possible 490, on average, a damage range of 140 to 210 isn’t out of the range of possibility. To help this happen, the deck needs to be filled with multiple copies of various Misty’s Pokemon.

How To Play This Best Misty’s Gyarados Deck in Pokemon TCG Destined Rivals

Ideal Starting Hand

The ideal hand should have a combination of Misty’s Psyduck, who should be placed in the Active Spot, and Misty’s Magikarp, who should be placed on the Bench. This way, Misty’s Psyduck can be sent to the top of the deck when Magikarp evolves, while Misty’s Gyarados is guaranteed 70 damage at least to start off. Misty’s Staryu and Fezendipiti ex are better off a bit later in this deck.

Key Cards

This is the strategy involved in this deck:

  • Get Misty’s Gyarados in a position where it can spam Splashing Panic over and over again.
  • Use Misty’s Psyduck to ensure that 70 damage is always guaranteed. Once discarded, use cards like Lana’s Aid and Night Stretcher to retrieve Misty’s Psyduck and re-use them.
  • Misty’s Lapras can help find other Misty’s Pokemon with its move Swim Together.
  • Misty’s Starmie can be a late-game cleaner, dealing high damage upon evolving.

Best Matchups

Fire-type decks, especially single Prize ones like Ethan’s Typhlosion, struggle to outpace this deck. The discard-and-draw playstyle of this deck makes it very aggressive upfront, making it harder for slower decks to recover if they lose too many Prizes early on.

None of the cards in this deck have particularly high HP stats in comparison to the modern Pokemon TCG meta (discounting Fezendipiti ex, who is a support card). As a result, a series of back-and-forth exchanges will start where each player knocks out the opposing Active Pokemon. However, even if you win that exchange eventually, barring Misty’s Magikarp, the rest of the cards on the Bench are vulnerable to being sniped from the Bench.

Electric-type decks like Joltik’s Box are great counters to Misty’s Gyarados.

Tips and Tricks

Here are some tips to use this deck well:

  • Try to hold onto a pair of Misty’s Staryu and Misty’s Starmie for the endgame, placing Staryu on the field a turn before so that you can evolve it.
  • Use the Stadium card Academy by Night to place a Misty’s Pokemon on top of your deck to further boost Splashing Panic’s damage.
