Collect all Shadow Crystals and defeat Gerson, the Chapter 4 secret boss, to progress toward Deltarune’s potential hidden ending.
Each of the first four chapters of Deltarune has hidden puzzles, a secret boss, and a Shadow Crystal to obtain. Besides the choices you make in the main story, these secret encounters help shape the narrative and reveal more of Deltarune’s world.
The secret boss in each of the chapters is an optional opponent and presents one of the most difficult challenges in the game. Following Jevil, Spamton, and Roaring Knight in the first three chapters, Chapter 4 hides an unassuming secret boss who may be connected to a secret ending.
How To Unlock the Secret Boss of Deltarune Chapter 4
Gerson is the secret boss for Chapter 4 of Deltarune. The old man sits in his study and interacts with you during the main story. However, to face him and obtain the Magic Axe (Justice Axe), you will first have to solve the Piano Puzzle.
The Golden Piano Room can be reached by leaving Gerson’s study through the top left door and climbing the bookshelf to the right. The correct combination of notes needs to be played on the piano to open a passage through Gerson’s fireplace. Backtrack to find three music sheets that provide the right sequence to be played. Deltarune Chapter 4 Secret Boss: Gerson
When the heroes pass through the secret fireplace doorway and enter the room beyond, Susie rushes ahead to grab the Magic Axe displayed on a pedestal. However, before she can pick it up, Gerson arrives and points out that the axe is priced at a discounted rate of $999,999,999. Laughing at her expense, he challenges Susie to harm a single hair on him to take the axe for free.
Then, Gerson initiates one of the toughest boss battles in Deltarune. He turns your heart green, making it stationary, and forcing you to use a weapon to block incoming attacks. The heart becomes mobile after a hammer strike, which triggers an even deadlier onslaught from Gerson.
All the while, he narrates an old tale to Susie, teaching her to think for herself and trust in her abilities. The only way to “beat” Gerson is to block and dodge his attacks while healing until the conversation reaches its conclusion.

Chapter 4 Secret Boss Rewards and Ending
After the battle is over, true to his word, Gerson hands over the Justice Axe to Susie. The axe’s description reads, “It has no special powers. However, in order to attain this item, you became much stronger.”
In addition to the axe, Gerson also gives Susie a Shadow Crystal, which he found within his desk. He says he felt like someone wanted him to use it, but it doesn’t interest him. Each secret boss in Deltarune rewards you with a Shadow Crystal for defeating them. There is no use for the Shadow Crystals so far, but we theorize that having all of them may unlock a secret ending to the game.
