Following the immense success of Undertale, Toby Fox continues his delightful work with its successor, Deltarune. The story of Deltarune runs parallel to that of Undertale but takes place in a separate timeline. However, the two have several commonalities, with shared characters being a major one.
Toby Dog, or Annoying Dog, is a hilarious recurring character from Undertale that has found its way into Deltarune. In the 2015 game, Annoying Dog is considered a self-insert for Toby Fox; hence, it was dubbed Toby Dog. He makes a cameo in Deltarune Chapter 4 and challenges Kris to a race. Here is an outline of how you can meet the beloved character and face off against him.
Where to Find Toby Dog in Deltarune
Toby Dog can be found past the top right doorway in Old Man Gerson’s Study. But first, you must beat Jackenstein and unlock climbing tools before you reach the adorable canine. Once you have done so, backtrack to the study and climb the staircase on the right.
There will be two doors up ahead. Go through the first door on the right. In the following room, you will observe two giant columns standing parallel to each other. Reach the base of the column, and Toby Dog will enter stage right.
How To Beat Toby Dog in Deltarune
As the Annoying Dog arrives, he and Kris notice a treasure chest at the top of the columns. They stare each other down as Toby Dog revs up his… haunches? Then, the two begin climbing, and the race is on. As you climb upward, Toby Dog will take the lead with his brisk pace.
Whenever you encounter a gap in the climbing handholds, charge-jump by holding the confirm button (Z on PC) and release it when the jump’s outline reaches the handholds above. Although the path may not be visible initially, the column can be climbed in three dimensions, and if a path above is not accessible, climb to either side. For example, following the first jump, you have to move to the right before you can jump up, and then jump across the gap to the left. To do so, charge jump while holding the left directional key.
Past the first section, you will encounter white ovals floating horizontally. Avoid them as you jump to the rightmost side and climb straight to the next section. Continue maneuvering to reachable handholds, pass another obstacle area, and you will enter a straight vertical climb. Don’t fret if you fall behind Toby Dog during the challenging climb, because you can catch up in this stretch.
As you scale the masonry side by side, Toby Dog’s entire column will collapse. Just as victory seems inevitable, the canine begins approaching your column on impossibly tall stilts. He then starts climbing above you and reaches the top first. However, Toby Dog was not after the chest, but the bone beside it. He takes the giant bone and exits the area, tail wagging.
Rewards for Racing Toby Dog
The treasure chest at the top of the column is the reward for racing Toby Dog. Open it to obtain the Dog Dollar. The Dog Dollar is like a regular dollar but with the face of a dog on it. Additionally, its selling value decreases with every chapter. A Dodge Coin reference perhaps?
