In The Alters, you’re literally racing against time to find a way off the planet before the sun ultimately rises and burns you to a crisp. In doing that, you’ll need to manage and upgrade your base and items continuously. Salvaging materials from the planet isn’t as easy as simply pressing a button after reaching a specific location.

Instead, you’ll need to survey areas to find out where certain materials could be. After reaching the general area, you will then need to pinpoint the exact area of the deposits with your Scanner tool. In this guide, we’ll explore how you can use the Scanner in The Alters effectively.

First, you need to reach the general location where you have discovered a mineral deposit. Next, bring up your tool wheel and select the Scanner from there. With the Scanner armed place a few probes on the ground where you think the deposit could be. Always make a closed shape with the probes, such as a triangle with three probes. Once you create a closed shape, the scan occurs automatically. You will see lines appear on an underground map of that particular area.

If the lines are white, you should move the probes to a slightly different location. As you move closer to the actual deposit spot, these lines will slowly start turning red. Whenever you need to move the probes, pick them and then shift to the other spot. You have limited probes in your possession, so if you don’t pick up the ones you used on the wrong spot, you’ll soon run out of available ones.

When the probes are set down at the exact center of a deposit spot, a droplet icon will appear on the underground map. When this happens, you will get all of your probes back automatically. Moreover, the game will immediately give you the option to set up a Mining Outpost on the spot to excavate the materials underground.
