You need to pick up a cross or energy drinks only at higher difficulties. You can ignore them if you are playing on the first two difficulty levels. If you do engage with the higher difficulty levels, crosses and energy drinks can keep ghosts at bay.
Do not use cursed objects, as they can drain your energy quickly. As soon as a new mission starts, your team should split up to find the important ghost detection items. If you stick together, it only slows down the mission and increases ghost activity, making the mission more difficult.
