Lies of P Overture is filled with some of the most challenging boss and enemy encounters in any souls-like game to date. Some of the bosses in the DLC even surpass the ones in the base game, particularly the final boss, Aerlecchino. The DLC also has bosses that are essentially a more powerful or a slightly tweaked version of some of the base game boss fights.

The best example of this is the Anguished Guardian of the Ruins, who is essentially a more spectacular, albeit slightly easier, version of the Fallen Archbishop Andreas boss fight from the base game. Although the boss fight is slightly easier, it’s far from being a pushover. Instead, if you don’t play to the boss’s weaknesses, it can prove to be a massive roadblock for your main story progress in the DLC.

To help with that, here’s a comprehensive guide on how to easily defeat the Anguished Guardian of the Ruins in Lies of P Overture.

The Anguished Guardian of the Ruins is the penultimate boss of Lies of P Overture. You do fight Lumacchio after the Anguished Guardian, but that’s more of a mini-boss encounter before the real final boss of the game. Although for a penultimate boss, Anguished Guardian is rather easy, it still packs a punch if you don’t play to its weaknesses. Much like the Fallen Archbishop, the Anguished Guardian is a massive carcass enemy type, which can inflict Decay with its attacks. Save for the first phase, the Anguished Guardian borrows most of the attacks from the Fallen Archbishop, even the “meteoric ground slam.”

As such, if you’ve played the base game recently, you will find this boss fight rather easy. However, there’s one key difference between the Anguished Guardian and the Fallen Archbishop. The Anguished Guardian is significantly bigger in size, and as such, it can often one-shot you with its more powerful attacks. Furthermore, in the second phase of the boss fight, the Anguished Guardian gets access to an AOE attack, which not only inflicts Decay but also staggers you between attacks, making it harder to land a successful hit.

However, since it’s a carcass, it’s quite easy to defeat if you use a Fire weapon or just the Fire Grindstone with a properly optimized build.

For the Anguished Guardian, we highly recommend using an Advanced build. You can defeat the boss with Technique or Motivity builds as well. However, Advanced builds are the best option if you’re aiming for efficiency and ease. As for weapons, we highly recommend the Black Steel Cutter or the Salamander Dagger (with Acidic Crystal Spear Handle). These weapons not only dish out good physical damage but, paired with an Advance build, can easily inflict Burn debuff on enemies. Fire, much like any other ailment, deals damage over time. However, if you keep attacking the enemy while it’s burning, you can stack the Burn status, which deals exponentially more damage.

Here are some tips to easily defeat the Anguished Guardian of the Ruins:

  • While not necessary, summoning the Specter for this boss fight can make a massive difference. The Specter can easily divert the boss’s attention away from you, which gives you ample time to charge your heavy attacks or unleash a Fable Art combo.

  • Due to its size, stance-breaking the Anguished Guardian isn’t all that easy, even with multiple heavy attacks. As such, your best option is to stack elemental damage, which is the most efficient way to dish out huge chunks of damage.

  • Make sure you have the Carcass Butcher’s Amulet and the Arm of God Amulet equipped for this boss fight. Pair that with a Fire-Advance build, and you should be able to dish out massive amounts of damage to the boss.

  • Due to the boss’s hitbox and its size, we found that dodging and running away from it is more efficient (and safe) than trying to parry it. You can still parry its swipe and slam attacks, but that’s not recommended (or necessary).
