The quirky and surreal sci-fi game The Alters takes you through a unique journey. In this game, you must manage your base, gather resources, fight radiation, and lead your life with multiple versions of yourself (called Alters).

Here, you play as Jan, and managing your team efficiently is crucial. Each character has unique aspirations, visions, and agendas (despite being a clone of the main character, Jan). As you might expect, this is no cakewalk. For the team to work in unison like a well-oiled machine, you, as Jan, must take care of the team members. Moreover, sometimes you are coerced into situations where you must make not-so-savory decisions.

Decisions mean choices and paths not taken. As expected, The Alters has multiple endings. Let us explore all the endings of this vivid game.

All Endings in The Alters

In Acts 1 and 2, Maxwell is determined to keep the Alters a secret from Earth. If you do not spill the beans to Lena (you will not be able to use Maxwell’s treatment for the Alters’ neurological disease in Act 2), Maxwell continues to be your patron in Act 3. If Lena discovers the Alters and develops the neural implants, she reports Maxwell to the board and gets him fired. After that, you are forced to work with Ally Corporation’s COO, Agatha.

Another fork in the path occurs in Act 3. Technician Jan and any other Alters who leave the base will only return if you have used the neural implants. This means taking Maxwell’s side results in permanent animosity with them. However, the ending sequence remains the same. Both Maxwell and Agatha will go against you if you attempt to save the Alters and do not comply with the extraction plan.

You can sabotage the rescue ship to save the Alters or let the soldiers carry out their duties, handing over the Alters to Maxwell or Agatha.

Maxwell’s Ending

Trusting Maxwell to oversee the rescue mission results in the most devastating outcome. This vile patron steals your Rapidium, using it to resurrect Project Elah, his pet neuroscience experiment. The global food crisis worsens, and the Alters become test subjects.

Lucas is disgusted. He cuts his ties with Maxwell and focuses on humanitarian projects. On the other hand, Jan’s life on Earth is comfortable with no trials or sentences, but you are at Maxwell’s mercy forever. Additionally, you are forced to live with knowing that he has led the Alters to a despicable fate.

Agatha’s Ending

On the other hand, Agatha and the Corporation bring the rescue ship home as planned. Lena receives a promotion and becomes the Head of Rapidium Technologies. However, she cuts ties with Jan for his betrayal of the Alters. Jan becomes the poster boy of the new Corporation propaganda, and it is as if the Alters never existed. Their fate is unknown. However, Jan receives a mysterious encoded email before leaving his apartment, which might suggest otherwise. This is not a very savory path either.

Taking the Alters’ Side

If you take the anti-authoritarian route by disobeying either patron, you can save the Alters by taking on the rescue team, as your crew discussed before lighting the beacon. Even if you plan on betraying the Alters, they must believe you are on their side. The possible routes are:

  1. Constructing the false Rapidium Ark.
  2. Either deploying four Explosive Charges or a Sleeping Gas Canister with a Suit Mask Upgrade.
  3. Taking help from Lucas or using Autopilot.

All these options can be prepared, but you can only choose one during the action. However, we suggest you prepare all of them, since that will allow you to go back and forth by saving and loading. You’ll be able to see all the possible outcomes.

Needless to say, taking on the guards and hijacking the rescue ship will mark Jan as a criminal on Earth. However, the Alters will be able to break free.

Killing the Soldiers or Knocking Them Out

The Explosive Charges are cheaper and don’t require research or an additional upgrade. They can be planted in different places in the base and detonated from a distance. The explosion will kill the rescue team members, and this will add to Jan’s sentence.

The Sleeping Gas takes longer and is more expensive. However, it only temporarily neutralizes the guards, and Jan’s sentence later in the game has no murder charges. Use the explosives solely for the Achievement/Trophy that you can unlock. We strongly suggest the Sleeping Gas.

Lucas or Autopilot

Short answer: pick Lucas. He will only offer to help if you’ve gained his trust. He’ll guide the rescue ship to a safe location using the Remote Access Terminal. This way, Rapidium is used better on Earth. Moreover, you have a strong alibi. Lucas pleads guilty and takes the blame for hijacking the ship, or blames Maxwell. This also results in a reduction in Jan’s sentence.

On the other hand, using the Autopilot System to redirect the ship yourself will result in Lucas not covering for you, adding the crime of hijacking to your plea deal.

Jan Botanist

This Alter takes you to some interesting conclusions. For this, you must work with Agatha and complete the Botanist’s storyline by Act 3. Jan Botanist will come up to you and ask to switch places, i.e., proposing that you, aka Jan Prime, should escape with the Alters while Jan Botanist goes to Earth.

Point to be noted: Jan Botanist will not have the dialogue options Jan Prime has obtained from Lessons Learned.

If you do not dismiss the idea, Jan Botanist will be the last Alter you’ll bid goodbye to as all the Earth-bound Alters start their cryosleep. At this point, you can switch places with Jan Botanist and play the rest of the game as him.

Botanist Jan eventually takes Jan Prime’s place in the trial. Lena and Agatha help him if you do not interfere with the soldiers, and he gets away with minimal sentences. Jan Prime reveals the truth to Lena. Both of them wonder what happened to the real Jan (you).

However, if you meddle with the soldiers, Agatha gets furious, and Botanist Jan receives strict sentencing. Here too, Lena and he discuss their possible future together and wonder what you are up to.
