Understand Umamusume: Pretty Derby as a free-to-play trainer with five essential tips on support cards, training, and rerolling.

Umamusume: Pretty Derby is a free-to-play racing simulator that features anime horse girls based on real-world racehorses. The player steps into the shoes of a trainer at Tracen Academy to lead their Umamusume (horse girls) to victory. The gacha game primarily involves unlocking and training horse girls for the Career Mode and Team Trials (PvP).
This guide will focus on preparing you for Career Mode with five key tips to get started as a free-to-play (F2P) trainer.
Top 5 Beginner Tips for Umamusume Pretty Derby
1) Roll for Support Cards

Support cards (SSR) assist in the game’s primary objective of raising horse girls, making them more valuable than even a three-star horse girl for beginners. This is because they have a key role to play in training your chosen horse girl in Career Mode.
You will want to play with and train different horse girls over the long run to unlock achievements and pass down their traits to other horse girls through Legacy. Support cards will assist you through all careers and runs, earning you dividends.
2) Focused Training

Spreading out your training across all stats may seem tempting at first, but it’s best avoided because of how training levels up. If you perform speed training level 1 repeatedly, it will evolve to speed training level 2 and provide a bigger boost to the speed stat after every training session. This is further increased if you have good support cards helping with that particular stat’s training. Here are the stats to focus on for particular events:
- Speed and Power: Sprint, Short, Mile, and Dirt events
- Stamina and Guts: Medium, Long, and Dirt events
- Wit: Beneficial in all events
Generally, focusing on speed and power is the most optimal, as other stats will also increase slightly during their training sessions. Additionally, speed and power fuel the simplest racing style—Front Runner.
3) Upgrade Friendships with Support Cards

When your horse girl trains with a particular exercise, they add friendship points to their relationship with the support card horse girl who trains with them. While on the training screen, you can see the support horse girls who will help with a particular exercise in the top right corner. Therefore, choosing exercises with two support cards will level up friendship with both of them.
Once you reach level 4 friendship with a support horse girl, she provides various bonuses to training, drastically improving performance. Additionally, they will pass down skills to the main horse girl and trigger special events to earn even more skills. Keep in mind that the friendship ratings only last until the end of the run or career you are playing.
4) Running Style

Each horse girl has a running style that determines her approach to the race and requires different training. Front-runners race ahead of the pack from the start, burning through their stamina quickly to reach the finish line before tiring out. Training speed allows front-runners to attain higher top speeds while training power allows them to accelerate to that speed quicker.
Due to this simple dynamic, front-runner horse girls are the easiest to train for beginners and F2P players. Pace Runners, Back Chasers, and Late Runners are a little more complex to train, and are recommended after you have a complete understanding of the basics.
5) You Can Reroll for Different Starting Cards

The initial cards you receive in Umamusume: Pretty Derby are incredibly important, especially for F2P players. These cards are determined by the game’s gacha mechanic, which can deal you an unfavorable hand from the get-go.
However, you can reroll the starting deck by deleting user data and restarting the game from a new save to get a better deck. To do this, head to the main menu and select “Delete User Data” at the bottom. Use this option only if you’re on a new account with no substantial saved progress.
