All characters in Umamusume: Pretty Derby have aptitudes for track surface, race distance, and running styles. These aptitudes range from rank “G” on the lower end to a maximum of rank “S.” Aptitudes below “A” rank decrease performance for their respective event or style, while “S” rank increases performance by 5-10%

Trainers can modify all aptitudes with the help of pink Sparks inherited from Legacies (parents). Each Legacy brings with it three pink Sparks, one of its own, and two from its Sub-Legacies (grandparents). However, while selecting Legacies for a new career, you can only improve the trainee’s aptitude rank to “A.”

Your Trainee’s aptitudes can increase from A to S-rank during career inspiration events if a pink Spark is activated. For example, if your trainee’s Medium distance aptitude is at A, and a 3-star Medium Spark activates during the inspiration, Medium aptitude will increase to “S” rank. As long as the trainee has an A-rank in the aptitude, even a 1-star Pink Spark can raise it to S-rank.

There are two inspiration events in a career, and Sparks are randomly chosen from both Legacies and all four Sub-Legacies during it. The first inspiration event takes place in early April of Classic (2nd) Year, and the second event occurs in early April of Senior (3rd) Year. However, there are a few factors that you can control to improve the chances of getting the S-rank aptitudes you want.

Affinity

Affinity is represented by a shape while selecting Legacies for your trainees.

  • Great Affinity: Double-O (◎)
  • Good Affinity: Circle (O)
  • Bad Affinity: Triangle (△)

Having a higher affinity improves your chances of getting more Sparks during inspiration events. Generally, choosing Legacies with the same track aptitudes as the trainee is an easy way to get high Affinity.

Pink Sparks

Having more Pink Sparks dedicated to the aptitude you want to improve to S rank gives you a higher chance of activating the Spark during inspiration events. So, if you want to raise Medium aptitude to S rank, choose Legacies with as many Medium Sparks as possible.

Legacies and Sub-Legacies

The Sparks of Legacies (parents) have a greater chance of activating than those of Sub-Legacies (grandparents). Therefore, choosing Legacies with the pink Spark you want is favorable.

How Does Aptitude Ranking Impact Performance in Umamusume: Pretty Derby?

The following table shows how much aptitude ratings impact performance for running styles, Surface, and Distance. The percentage point increase or decrease is applied to all stats. For Wit increased through S ranking, the chance of activating skills does not improve.

TypeSABCDEFG
Running Style+10%0%-15%-25%-40%-60%-80%-90%
Surface+5%0%-10%-20%-30%-50%-70%-90%
Distance+5%0%-10%-20%-40%-60%-80%-90%

Raising the running style’s aptitude to S-rank is the most beneficial for overall performance, followed by aptitudes for track surface and race distance. Therefore, if you plan to train a Front Runner, try to find Front Runner Pink Sparks in Legacies to raise the running style’s aptitude to S rank.

Your trainee generates a single Pink Spark – randomly rated between 1 and 3 stars – at the end of their career. Pink Sparks can only be created for distances, surface types, or running styles for which your trainee has an ‘A’ or ‘S’ rank aptitude.
