In its Crowned form, Zamazenta has become quite the threat in Pokemon VGC. Forming a deadly duo with Shadow Rider Calyrex, Zamazenta has become the core to watch out for in Regulation I. With Worlds 2025 fast approaching, players need to be prepared to face the mascot of Pokemon Shield. Otherwise it will end up bashing them repeatedly with its shield.
The plan when dealing with Zamazenta is to play around its high defenses and ability to protect from spread moves with Wide Guard. In this guide we will look at the best Pokemon for that purpose.
Pokemon VGC: How To Face Zamazenta
Zamazenta Crowned is a Fighting/Steel dual type when it holds the Rusted Shield Item. Its ability, Dauntless Shield, gives it a one-time boost to its defense, which powers up its Fighting STAB of choice, Body Press, which deals damage based on how high the user’s Defense stat is.
Additionally, Zamazenta Crowned tends to use an Impish nature to give its physical defense a further boost. It can also Terastallize into a Dragon-type for a resistance against common types like Fire, Water, and Electric. These are the Pokemon that players need to consider bringing on their teams to deal with Zamazenta in Pokemon VGC:
- Koraidon: As a part Fighting-type, Koraidon can deal super-effective damage to Zamazenta. A Life Orb boosted Close Combat comes very close to KOing Zamazenta from full HP despite all its defense boosts.
- Fire-types: Not only do Fire-types like Ho-Oh and Volcarona hit Zamazenta for super effective damage with their Fire STAB, but they can also burn it to lower its attacking capability.
- Amoonguss: More of a defensive check than a direct counter, the mushroom walls Zamazenta very effectively. It can shrug off its attacks and heal by switching out thanks to its ability Regenerator. Even more critically, it can put Zamazenta to sleep with Spore, which is a 100% accurate sleep move.
- Landorus Incarnate: While Landorus isn’t a very common pick, it might be worth including it if you are having trouble with Zamazenta. Its STAB Earth Power deals super effective damage, while it can shut down Wide Guard with Taunt. Its part Flying typing gives it a resistance to Body Press as well.
- Lunala: As a Ghost-type, Lunala is immune to Fighting-type moves like Body Press. Its Moongeist Beam deals solid neutral damage to Zamazenta as well.
