The Radeon RX 9070 GRE is the new GPU in the RX 9000 series, but how does it compare to the Radeon RX 9070 XT?

AMD’s newly released Radeon RX 9070 GRE is a confusing product. The GRE models used to provide a higher value for money, or at least that’s what the GRE model used to be. Is it still the case, or should you get the Radeon RX 9070 XT instead? That’s exactly what we plan to find in this article, with a detailed comparison of Radeon RX 9070 GRE and RX 9070 XT.
Note: Parts of this article are subjective and reflect the writer’s opinions.
Radeon RX 9070 GRE vs RX 9070 XT: Detailed Comparison
The Radeon RX 9070 GRE and RX 9070 XT are based on the same AMD RDNA 4 architecture. The former is value-oriented, while the latter is performance-oriented. However, before we start this comparison, let’s check out the specs of the two GPUs to get a better idea of what they are capable of.
Specs Comparison

Here are the specs of the Radeon RX 9070 GRE and RX 9070 XT:
Specifications | Radeon RX 9070 GRE | Radeon RX 9070 XT |
---|---|---|
Architecture | RDNA 4 | RDNA 4 |
Shader cores | 3072 | 4096 |
RT cores | 48 | 64 |
TMUs | 192 | 256 |
ROPs | 96 | 128 |
Base core clock speeds | 1420 MHz | 1660 MHz |
Boost core clock speeds | 2790 MHz | 2970 MHz |
Memory capacity | 12GB GDDR6 | 16GB GDDR6 |
Memory bus width | 192-bit | 256-bit |
Memory bandwidth | 432.0 GB/s | 644.6 GB/s |
Manufacturing node | 4nm | 4nm |
Thermal design power (TDPs) | 220W | 304W |
According to the specs table, the Radeon RX 9070 GRE has fewer shader cores, RT cores, TMUs, memory, and other things compared to the Radeon RX 9070 XT. However, as we know, specs don’t always translate to real-world performance. That’s why it’s best to compare two GPUs in games to know exactly what they are capable of.
Performance Comparison
Here’s how the AMD Radeon RX 9070 GRE and RX 9070 XT perform in some popular games released in the last five years:
Games | Radeon RX 9070 GRE | Radeon RX 9070 XT |
---|---|---|
Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 | 88 FPS | 122 FPS |
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 | 67 FPS | 74 FPS |
Helldivers 2 | 81 FPS | 144 FPS |
Monster Hunter Wilds (RT + FSR Q) | 88 FPS | 92 FPS |
The Last Of Us: Part 2 | 89 FPS | 113 FPS |
Assassin’s Creed: Shadows (RT + FSR Q) | 59 FPS | 85 FPS |
Delta Force | 183 FPS | 218 FPS |
Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 | 63 FPS | 82 FPS |
Note: The two GPUs tested here were evaluated at a 1440p resolution with High/Ultra Settings, unless otherwise specified. All the FPS numbers were sourced from the Hardware for Gamers channel on YouTube. For the tests, the two graphics cards were paired with a Ryzen 7 9800X3D CPU.
On average, the Radeon RX 9070 XT delivers 29.5% more FPS than the Radeon RX 9070 GRE. The former is 20.4% faster than the latter in ray tracing. Therefore, the Radeon RX 9070 XT is a lot faster in gaming.
Price Comparison

The Radeon RX 9070 GRE is currently only available in China and a few other regions, but it has yet to be launched in the US. It is priced at 4,199 RMB, which converts to around $584, but keep in mind that the Chinese price includes VAT. Therefore, the price of Radeon RX 9070 GRE should be around $550 without VAT.
On the other hand, the Radeon RX 9070 XT is available right now for around $720 to $800 on Amazon. Therefore, it is around 30% more expensive but also has 4GB more memory.
Final Verdict on Radeon RX 9070 GRE vs RX 9070 XT
The Radeon RX 9070 XT delivers around 30% more performance than the Radeon RX 9070 GRE. The former also has 16GB of memory compared to the latter’s 12GB of memory. Radeon RX 9070 XT is also 30% more expensive, but it is still the better choice since it has more VRAM, which future-proofs it.
However, if you have a limited budget, then you should get the standard Radeon RX 9070 instead, which is still better than the GRE model that doesn’t cost a lot of money.
