Pokemon VGC: How To Best Use Farigiraf

Not only did the relatively weak Girafarig get a new evolution in Farigiraf, its been a consistent presence in VGC. Farigiraf has been an amazing support Pokemon throughout the season, all the way to Regulation I. As a result, players will need to prepare for this Pokemon if they happen to face it in a match. This guide will help you do just that.

How To Use Farigiraf in Pokemon VGC

Farigiraf has quite a few things going for it. Its Normal/Psychic typing is surprisingly good defensively, giving it an immunity to Ghost-type attacks like Calyrex Shadow Rider‘s Astral Barrage. Farigiraf also has a decently high HP stat of 120, giving it good bulk despite its low defenses of 70. Even its low Speed of 60 isn’t an issue thanks to this giraffe learning Trick Room.

Farigiraf’s Best Moves for VGC

Farigiraf’s movepool consists of several useful options besides Trick Room. These include Helping Hand to give its ally a power boost for a turn, Wish to heal itself or its ally switching in, dual screens to lower damage, and Psychic Noise to stop the target from healing for a turn. Its damage output isn’t terrible either, thanks to access to Foul Play, a Dark-type move that deals damage to the opponent based on their Attack stat.

Finally, its ability Armor Tail prevents priority moves like the omnipresent Fake Out, as well as others like Sucker Punch or Thunderclap from Raging Bolt.

Farigiraf’s Best Items for VGC

Farigiraf prefers to use the consumable Electric Seed for a one-time Defense boost. However, it does need the help of Electric Terrain to activate, with Miraidon being the only active setter in the current meta. Other options include Sitrus Berry for a quick heal after taking some damage.

Farigiraf’s Best Partners for VGC

Here are some Pokemon that are great partners for Farigiraf:

• Miraidon: If you are running Electric Seed, Miraidon becomes a necessity by default. This isn’t a forced partnership as the two work well together. Farigiraf blocks priority that can hinder Miraidon, and in return, Miraidon obliterates most things it faces.
• Calyrex Ice Rider: As a slow Pokemon, Calyrex Ice Rider benefits from Trick Room. While it can set itself, having Farigiraf do it lets Calyrex attack more often.
• Iron Hands: Another slow Pokemon that could use Trick Room support. Iron Hands is a powerful non-restricted Pokemon who becomes quite deadly when its one limitation, its low Speed, is no longer an issue thanks to Farigiraf setting up Trick Room.
