Grimmsnarl is a useful Pokemon in the VGC scene. Its main claim to fame is its access to the ability Prankster, similar to Whimsicott, which gives its status moves +1 priority. However, as it is part Dark-type, other Prankster users cannot inflict their status conditions on it. So, in this guide, we will see how to get the most out of this Pokemon in the Regulation I setup.
How To Use Grimmsnarl in Pokemon VGC
One look at Grimmsnarl’s stats and the stat that sticks out the most is its Attack stat of 120. However, the rest of its stats are decidedly sub-par. This includes moderate at best bulk thanks to its 95/65/75 defenses and low Speed at 60. But what actually makes it competitively viable are two other factors. Firstly, its dual typing of Dark/Fairy, which is useful both defensively and offensively.
However, as mentioned before its ability Prankster gives its status moves +1 priority, giving it a useful niche. And this niche becomes even more useful as its Dark-typing blocks opposing Prankster Pokemon from using status moves like Thunder Wave, Quash, or Will-o’-Wisp on it.
Grimmsnarl’s Best Moves for VGC
Grimmsnarl usually has dual screens, Reflect and Light Screen, in two of its moveslots. For its third move, it can either have Thunder Wave to spread paralysis or Parting Shot to pivot while lowering a target’s Attack and Special Attack.
Its fourth move is usually Spirit Break, a Fairy-type move that has 75 base power and drops the target’s Special Attack by 1. However, it is sometimes switched out for Foul Play against Pokemon with higher Attack stats like Calyrex Ice Rider and Lunala.

Light Clay is the only item that Grimmsnarl uses in Regulation I, as its main role is to set up dual screens for its team.

- Most Pokemon that benefit from dual screens: Several Restricted Legendaries like Lunala, Miraidon, and Calyrex Shadow Rider benefit heavily from a dual-screen setup. So if you can find the team slot for the role, Grimmsnarl is the best choice for it.
- Fighting-types: Pokemon like Zamazenta and Urshifu Rapid Strike can take out Dark-types that would be immune to Grimmsnarl’s Prankster moves.
