In Pokemon Legends Z-A, trainers will encounter Rogue Mega Evolutions in Lumiose City. The upcoming title will feature certain Mega Evolved Pokemon in the wild that are able to go “rogue” and achieve the coveted form without a trainer’s input. While Mega Evolutions were centred around the bond that a Pokemon shares with its trainer, these variants seemingly are able to undergo the transformation without any such link.
The Rogue Mega Evolutions were shared as part of the Pokemon Presents in July 2025.

Skipping the requirements of a trainer bond or a Mega Stone, Rogue Mega Evolutions are wild encounters that are mega evolving on their own. They can’t contain their own strength and are going berserk. The developers mention that you would want a Team MZ ally and strong bond with your Pokemon to take down Rogue Mega Evolved Pokemon.
In the Pokemon Presents July 2025, Tyranitar, Absol, and Slowbro were shown undergoing such Rogue Mega Evolutions. The full list isn’t currently available. Whatever phenomenon is forcing this change, it will likely be one of the biggest mystery of Pokemon Legends Z-A that trainers will have to unravel. Given how dangerous these encounters are touted to be, trainers will have to make sure they are well-prepared for such skirmishes.

In the Pokemon Legends Z-A demo available at the World Championships 2025, players could tackle a Rogue Mega Evolved Absol as part of the story. During the encounter, your Pokemon (that can Mega Evolve) will battle it. You will have to fill up a Mega Gauge by Mega Energy that the Rogue Mega Evolved Pokemon drops when attacked. Once the gauge is full, you can Mega Evolve your Pokemon for the skirmish. The Mega Evolution for your Pokemon stays as long as it takes for the Mega Gauge to get depleted. Once that happens, you can repeat the process.
