Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War DE (Definitive Edition) combines all the original game’s standalone expansions and factions in a visually remastered bundle. Each expansion brings its own flavor of difficulty, from the tightly scripted missions of Winter Assault to the sprawling, territory-based struggles in Dark Crusade and Soulstorm.

These include several attractive campaign options for players seeking a challenging playthrough. Both linear and strategic campaigns have factions you can pick that demand a certain mastery over their mechanics. So, switch to the Hard difficulty and prepare to challenge the toughest campaigns in Dawn of War DE.

Soulstorm: Sisters of Battle

Although Soulstorm campaigns are often considered less engaging than Dark Crusade’s, they are more difficult due to their length. Additionally, structures built on a map during battle disappear, unlike in Dark Crusade, preventing you from establishing elaborate defenses.

The Sisters of Battle may appear similar to their Space Marine allies in their power armor, but playing the faction using brute force alone is highly inefficient. Their units, although durable, rely on Faith abilities and morale breaking to gain an advantage. It is hard to find reliable units in the faction to soak or deal significant damage. Even their relic unit, the Living Saint, has low base stats and pales in comparison to other ultimate units, even with her reviving ability.

Winter Assault: Order

Winter Assault has two campaigns: the Order (Good) campaign for Imperial Guard and Eldar, and Chaos (Evil) for Chaos Marines and Orks. In the Order campaign, the player leads the 412th Cadian Regiment tasked with taking control of the frozen planet Lorn V to recover an Imperator-class Titan.

The Imperial commander forms an alliance of convenience with the Eldar to combat the threat of Chaos and Orks. The difficulty spikes hard in later missions where enemy reinforcements seem endless, and map control is difficult to maintain with the Imperial Guard’s fragile units.

Soulstorm: Dark Eldar

The Dark Eldar campaign can be particularly brutal since their forces benefit from speed, harassment, and micromanagement. Winning with Dark Eldar requires a very different playstyle and more micro compared to most of the game’s factions. Combined with complex mechanics like Soul Powers, a lack of turrets, and glass cannon units, the faction is certainly not for beginners.

The Imperial Guard starts with the weakest tier 1 units in the game and has to rely on fortification tactics, turrets, and key upgrades to level the playing field. Each battle against progressively difficult foes in Soulstorm will have you struggling to establish a foothold in the early game.

Even after teching up to tier 2, guardsmen only become reliable with the right upgrades, weapon add-ons, and attached commanders. Their best units and upgrades are only unlocked at tier 3, when tanks can be deployed onto the battlefield. The reliance on heavy vehicles and methodical defensive play makes the Imperial Guard campaign challenging but also incredibly rewarding.
