Raging Bolt is an Electric/Dragon dual type that has seen decent use in the 2025 Pokemon VGC World Championships. It was even part of James Evans’ team that he took all the way to 2nd place. In this article, we will look at the best way to use Raging Bolt in VGC based on the one used by James Evans.
What Is the Build of James Evans’ Raging Bolt?
Raging Bolt’s highest stat is its Special Attack of 137. Its natural bulk is also more than decent thanks to its 125/91/89 defenses. James took advantage of this by giving it an Assault Vest to hold. This gave his Raging Bolt a further boost to its Special Defense at the cost of only using attacking moves. However, since Raging Bolt works best as a hard-hitting Special Attacker, this is a non-issue. To give its Electric-type attacks a further boost, James went with an Electric-type Terastallization.
Moves Used by James Evans’ Raging Bolt
Thunderclap is Raging Bolt’s signature move. This Electric-type move deals 70 damage but has +1 priority. Raging Bolt utilizes this move as a means of overcoming its relatively low Speed stat of 75. However, Thunderclap only works if the opponent uses an attacking move. In its next two moveslots, it uses two STAB moves, Thunderbolt and Dragon Pulse. For its final moveslot, Volt Switch is the choice for its ability to switch Raging Bolt out.
Which Pokemon Is Raging Bolt Good Against?
Several Restricted Pokemon, like Koraidon and Kyogre, take massive damage from Raging Bolt’s STAB moves. Other Pokemon that Raging Bolt does well against include Urshifu Rapid Strike and Tornadus.
Common Partners for Raging Bolt
- Calyrex Shadow Rider: Calyrex Shadow Rider can deal massive damage to both of the opponent’s Pokemon with Astral Barrage, while Raging Bolt can finish them off with Thunderclap.
- Koraidon: Koraidon gives Raging Bolt a Protosynthesis boost by setting up the sun. It also deals with the Grass-types that Raging Bolt struggles with if it Terastallizes into a Fire-type.
- Other Priority Move Users: Pokemon like Rillaboom and Chien-Pao have access to powerful priority moves that synergize well with Raging Bolt’s Thunderclap.
