Twenty years after the launch of the original title, Warhammer 40,000 Dawn of War DE (Definitive Edition) delivers a remastered bundle of Dawn of War and all its expansions. With the 40K franchise’s growing popularity, the edition aims to extend the beloved game’s longevity for old and new fans alike. The primary goal of the Definitive Edition is to adapt Dawn of War for modern systems. The game is available on PC and Steam Deck, and it offers a visually remastered experience of the seminal RTS title.

Compared to the original, Dawn of War DE features visual updates, including textures upscaled to four times the resolution and greater unit details. The most significant upgrade is to the game’s lighting system, with image-based and emissive lighting, surface glow, and detailed shadows.

Dawn of War DE is now 4K compatible with greater draw distances and a widescreen HUD update. Furthermore, the classic RTS has been updated for a 64-bit platform and features an integrated mod manager to better support community modding. While the 2004 original can run on virtually any modern system, Dawn of War DE’s visual updates come at the cost of higher system specifications. Here are the minimum specifications for Dawn of War DE.

Minimum

  • OS: Windows 10 x64
  • Processor: Intel i5 6th-gen | AMD Ryzen desktop processor with 4 cores @3GHz
  • Memory: 8 GB RAM
  • Graphics: NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 950 | AMD Radeon™ R9 370
  • DirectX: Version 9.0c
  • Storage: 25 GB available space

These system requirements are for playing Dawn of War DE on medium settings at 1920×1080 resolution. For 1440p or 4K gaming, the requirements will be higher. Nevertheless, it is safe to say that any modern graphics card and processor can easily run Dawn of War DE on high settings beyond a 1080p resolution.

The upscaled textures and assets are especially apparent in the game’s 25 GB size, which is a significant increase from the Dawn of War Anniversary Edition’s space requirement of 4.5 GB.

There are no recommended system requirements provided by the developers. It is advisable to play the game with marginally more powerful hardware than stated in the minimum requirements, even for 1080p. This is because lower settings reduce the impact of the Definitive Edition’s main selling points: visual clarity, detailed textures, and the lighting system.
