Hollow Knight is the prequel to Silksong, starring Hornet in both titles. Here’s what you should play first and the reason why.
With Silksong releasing in just under two weeks on September 4, 2025, this is the perfect opportunity to visit the title’s prequel. Hollow Knight is a platformer metroidvania game that is among the highest-rated in its genre.
The story of Silksong follows Hornet after she is captured and sent to Pharloom, an unknown land far away from Hallownest. While not mandatory, you should still play Hollow Knight before trying Silksong. Here’s an article explaining why.
Movement in Hollow Knight and Silksong
Platforming in Hollow Knight is unique and unlike any other game. At first, movement might feel very slow as you cannot even dash or double jump. However, as you continue progressing to new regions, abilities like wall grappling and other movement techniques start to unlock, which makes traversing the map quite fun. With some practice, you can master techniques like pogo jumping, which requires you to bounce off hazards using your nail/weapon.
In the trailer teaser on Team Cherry’s official YouTube channel, we can see Hornet traversing using the same yet more refined version of jumping and dashing. As a highly skilled Hunter and Princess, Hornet is much more agile and acrobatic than the Knight in the prequel. This results in movement techniques such as vaulting and using hooks to propel toward a direction mid-air.
If you play Hollow Knight before Silksong, getting used to the fast-paced movement can become much easier. However, this is optional, and you can start with Silksong to learn the unique style of platforming that Hollow Knight is known for.
