Learn how to use Urshifu Rapid Strike in the Pokemon VGC format based on Ko Tsukide’s 2025 World Championship build.
Urshifu Rapid Strike is one of the best non-Restricted Pokemon in the Pokemon VGC setup. Not only is it the more dominant Urshifu form in VGC, but its also the best Water-type in the format. For further proof, the highest placed Water-type Pokemon (not counting Terastallization, of course) at the 2025 World Championships was the Urshifu Rapid Strike on Ko Tsukide’s team. Having placed 5th in the tournament, it’s worth looking at his build of Urshifu Rapid Strike and how you can use it in VGC.
What Is the Build of Ko Tsukide’s Urshifu Rapid Strike?
The main reason to use Urshifu Rapid Strike is its signature move Surging Strikes. This Water-type move is a multi hit move that hits 3 times, with each hit having a base power of 25. However, not only are each of those hits “critical hits”, thanks to Urshifu Rapid Strike’s ability Unseen Fist, they bypass Protect and similar moves as well. So, considering that Urshifu would mainly be spamming Surging Strikes, Ko Tsukide gave it a Choice Band to hold. As a result, its Surging Strikes now can deal more damage. Finally, he opted for a Ghost Tera type, which provides immunity to Fake Out, as well as Fighting moves like Zamazenta Crowned‘s Body Press.
Moves Used by Ko Tsukide’s Urshifu Rapid Strike
Besides Surging Strikes, the other moves on Ko Tsukide’s Urshifu Rapid Strike are fairly standard in the meta. These include Close Combat for Fighting STAB, Aqua Jet for priority, and U-Turn to pivot out of the playing field.
Which Pokemon Is Urshifu Rapid Strike Good Against?
Most Fire-types in the VGC meta, like Incineroar and Chi-Yu, have to be wary of Surging Strikes. Also Pokemon weak to Fighting-type attacks like Zamazenta-Crowned, Terapagos, and Chien-Pao struggle to deal with Urshifu’s Close Combat.
Common Partners for Urshifu Rapid Strike
- Rillaboom and Incineroar: Along with Urshifu Rapid Strike, Rillaboom and Incineroar form a potent Fire/Water/Grass core that can deal with most threats.
- Rain setters: Pokmeon that set rain with the ability Drizzle, like Pelipper or Kyogre, give a boost to Urshifu Rapid Strike’s Water-type moves, like Surging Strikes.
