Elden Ring Nightreign’s Deep of Night mode can be quite challenging and even overwhelming at times, and that’s by design. Although Deep of Night retains the same structure as regular Expeditions, it does sprinkle a ton of new elements on top of it. For instance, in Deep of Night, you have access to loot (weapons) with multiple passives as well as debuffs.

Furthermore, the game mode also flips the script when it comes to early-game encampments, making them significantly more challenging with the introduction of new red-colored enemies. In addition to all that, Deep of Night also introduces a Depths mechanic, which increases the mode’s difficulty the more you progress.

However, the Depths have much more to them than just serving as a difficulty modifier. Here’s everything you need to know about the Deep of Night’s Depths in Elden Ring Nightreign.

Depths are effectively “ranks” that you obtain as you complete Deep of Night Expeditions. There are a total of 5 Depths in the current version of Elden Ring Nightreign. The first two Depths are similar to regular Expeditions, albeit with the new loot and randomization. While the first couple of Depths aren’t “easy,” they are manageable.

However, the same cannot be said for Depths 3 and above. From Depth 3, Deep of Night adds more randomized elements and also introduces Everdark Sovereign Nightlords as Day 3 bosses. Furthermore, in Depths 3 and above, certain Expeditions don’t even disclose the Nightlord until you’ve reached Day 3.

Here’s a rundown of all the Depths in Deep of Night:

  • Depth 1: Regular Expeditions with randomized loot and red enemies. Fixed Nightlord, which is disclosed at the start of an Expedition.
  • Depth 2: Similar to Depth 1 Expeditions, albeit with a higher frequency of red enemies and bosses.
  • Depth 3: Similar to Depths 1 and 2, but with Everdark Sovereign bosses as Nightlords.
  • Depth 4: Similar to Depth 3, but with randomized Nightlords, which are disclosed on Day 3.
  • Depths 5: Endless Depths, with consistent difficulty and randomization. Nightlords aren’t revealed during the Expedition until Day 3.

To progress through the Depths, you simply need to complete the Deep of Night Expeditions. At the end of an Expedition, you get Depth XP, which progresses the Depths. However, there’s a caveat to the progression of Depth XP.

The game rewards Depth XP only if you defeat the Nightlord at the end of an Expedition. Failing to defeat the Nightlord or disconnecting before Day 3 does not reward you with any XP. However, you do get Depth Relics for attempting Deep of Night Expeditions.
