Nintendo equipped the Switch 2 with a custom NVIDIA Tegra T239 SoC. The GPU portion of this chip is based on the Ampere architecture, and it has 12 dedicated RT cores. Therefore, the SoC is definitely capable of ray tracing, but path tracing is simply out of the question due to the low core count. However, the Tegra T239 is definitely capable of running at least one RT effect.

The Switch 2 trailer of Resident Evil Requiem revealed a whole lot of details. The use of Screen Space Reflections and Ambient Occlusion (AO) was clearly visible in a few shots. Therefore, it is clear that ray tracing is not used for the reflection or AO. However, if you compare the Switch 2 trailer with the PC trailer side by side, you will notice that the lighting is consistent between both trailers. This indicates that the Switch 2 version of Resident Evil Requiem does use the RT Global Illumination system for lighting.

After all, the SoC is definitely capable of running RT GI. Therefore, we do believe Resident Evil Requiem on Nintendo Switch 2 uses ray tracing for lighting. However, there is a significant drop in resolution, details, and hair rendering. This is to be expected, as the Tegra T239 is not capable of running games at a super high resolution.

Overall, Resident Evil Requiem looks quite good on the Nintendo Switch 2. We will just have to see if the game runs as well as it looks. Stay tuned for our launch review.
