Mega Evolution is returning to the franchise in the latest Pokemon game, Legends Z-A. However, the mechanic has been reworked to be used differently than before. While players will still need a Mega Stone and Ring to trigger the Mega Evolution, that appears to be the only thing that has stayed the same. So in this article, we will take a look at how Mega Evolution will work in Pokemon Legends Z-A.

How Does Mega Evolution Work in Pokemon Legends Z-A?

From both the trailer footage and datamined reports, it seems that Mega Evolution works differently depending on the situation:

In in-game battles with Pokemon trainers, it appears that Mega Evolution can be used after waiting for a meter to be filled. However, as seen in the picture, we can see that the meter is filled, yet Mega Evolution has not been activated. So this implies that both the Mega Ring and Mega Stone for the respective Pokemon are also necessary for activating the mechanic.

Rogue Mega Evolutions serve as the “raids” of this game. You will have to work alongside other members of Team MZ to defeat these powerful Megas gone wild. While battling them, you will notice little energy orbs of Mega Energy being released by the Rogue Mega. Collect those to fill your meter and unleash your own Mega to counter them.

Once activated, your Mega’s meter will start to drop, though you can temporarily restore it by collecting more orbs. You can switch in other Pokemon capable of Mega Evolution as well and Mega Evolve them against the threat. Once the Rogue Mega is defeated, you get its Mega Stone. Only one of these Stones is available and cannot be transferred.

In Link Battles, up to four players can link up and participate in a battle royale. The Mega meter works in a similar fashion here, except the Energy orbs will appear at random, with the players collecting them. Once the meter is full, unleash your Mega.
