For a start, any online features you are looking to access will need a Nintendo Switch Online service in addition to Internet access. The cost for this will vary depending on the region, but it is one you will need to pay if you intend to utilize any of Legends Z-A’s online offerings. Not only does this include multiplayer battles, but other features like Link Trading and Mystery Gifts as well.

The Multiplayer feature will work similarly to the in-game Z-A Battle Royale. You will start at Level Z and move up the ranks with each victory. Additionally, players can use any version of the game to battle each other, be it the Switch or the Switch 2. Make sure that you have the latest updates downloaded for online play as well.

As per datamine reports, battles in Pokemon Legends Z-A will be either 3v3 or 6v6. Apparently, there will be no double battles. Battles will be split into three formats:

  • Normal (Level 50 and Special Pokemon are banned)
  • Casual (Level 50 and all Pokemon are allowed)
  • Unrestricted (No restrictions on levels or Pokemon)

In battles, you will not be allowed to use more than one held item or species of Pokemon. As for restricted Pokemon, i.e., Special Pokemon, these are most likely going to be Box Art Legendaries or Mythicals. All battles are apparently limited to only three minutes, though whether this can be changed is not known.
