Loot Everything Shining

As soon as you are given free rein to explore in Lumiose, you will spot various Poke Balls and shining spots around the city. Make sure to walk over and grab these items whenever you can. It doesn’t take long and grants you a steady supply of items.

This could include various types of Poke Balls, along with healing items, or just items to sell. Regardless, you should collect as many items as you can. This will let you sell items in bulk for a good chunk of money later on.

Lost Poke Balls

If you throw any Poke Ball and miss, do not worry. Your money or effort did not go to waste. Instead, head to any Poke Center nearby to acquire them back. Outside any Poke Center, you should see an NPC.

Talk to this NPC to get the option to reclaim all your missed Poke Balls. This costs nothing, and gives you your lost items back, making it great for anyone at anytime in the game.

Kalos and Kanto Starters

You should pick your starter Pokemon quite carefully, as it will impact the early game. However, apart from these three, you can also get all three Kalos starters, along with any one Kanto starter (of your choosing). These can all be acquired fairly early on.

You have to complete three side missions (one for each Kalos starter) to get all three of them. On the other hand, you can only choose one out of Charmander, Bulbasaur and Squirtle. You can get this through a side mission you start after talking to Nurse Joy, who directs you to Mable’s Research Lab.

Mable’s Research Requests and Rewards

Early on, you will be introduced to Acting Director Mable. She will grant you a lengthy list of research tasks to perform. You should try to complete these as much as possible to attain some great rewards.

Most of her rewards are TMs, which are still great early on. These will also occasionally include Exp Candies to raise the level of your Pokemon. The great part is, you do not have to go out of your way to do these tasks. Most of the tasks entail battling a number of trainers or catching various Pokemon of the same type.

Overcome Environmental Obstacles

You will get the TM for Rock Smash extremely early on in the game, which will let you break any rocks in your way. Although you might think that this means you must have Rock Smash at all times on one Pokemon, this is not the case. Instead, you can break rocks with any Fighting type attacking move.

This is similar to any other environmental obstacles you find in the game. Use Fire attacks to burn away brambles, and Water attacks to clear away sludge buildup. Therefore, these are some Types you should try to prioritize on your team. At least having one of each will help exploration go smoothly.

Mono-Type Movesets

One of the major ways in which Pokemon Legends Z-A is different from the mainline games is the combat. Here, you cannot spam the same move over and over to claim victory. Instead, they will have a cooldown.

Therefore, multiple moves of the same type might be advised for some Pokemon at least. This will help you chain together super-effective hits one after another.

Avail the Lumi Cab

In every street, you will spot at least one blue car with an NPC nearby. This is the Lumi Cab service, which can be availed for a small fee of 710 Poke Dollars. These can take you to any marked location on the map, regardless of whether you have visited it or not. This will be a great way to jump from one side of the city to another without walking around.

Collect Mega Shards

While walking around the city, you will spot purplish rocks everywhere. These Mega Crystals drop Mega Shards, which can be traded for some valuable items. It doesn’t take any effort to direct your Pokemon to break it using any move.

You can find these everywhere across the city; however, some roofs seem to have them in clusters. This brings us to the last point on the list.

Explore the Roofs

The rooftops of Pokemon Legends Z-A have a lot of secrets waiting to be uncovered. These include not only Mega Shards, but also TMs and many elusive Pokemon. If a Pokemon you want is not in a Wild Zone, you might find it up on the roofs instead.

Exploration will be rewarded, so don’t feel like rushing the main story to get strong. This was the complete beginner’s guide and all the tips and tricks you will need to beat Pokemon Legends Z-A.
