Pokemon Legends Z-A has different battling mechanics compared to the mainline series of games. Battles are focused on real-time combat, instead of the usual turn-based mechanics. However, this combat differs depending on whether you battle wild Pokemon or a trainer’s team. So let’s see what those differences are.

Battling Wild Pokemon in Legends Z-A

Here are the mechanics of battling wild Pokemon in Legends Z-A:

  • Similar to the games in the main series, you can run away from a wild Pokemon battle. Usually, your Pokemon needs to be faster than the Pokemon it’s battling. In Legends Z-A, you just need to recall your Pokemon and run away from the attacking Pokemon.
  • The wild Pokemon will sometimes target you as well. This will also happen while dealing with Rogue Mega Evolutions.
  • It is possible to dodge and sprint while participating in a wild Pokemon battle.

Battling a Trainer’s Pokemon in Legends Z-A

Here’s how a trainer battle differs from a wild battle in Legends Z-A:

  • Again, similar to the mainline games, there’s no running from a trainer battle. The battle ends when either all of your or your opponent’s Pokemon have fainted.
  • One of your Pokemon has to be on the field at all times in a trainer battle. If you switch out a Pokemon, you will immediately need to switch another in.
  • Your Pokemon can dodge attacks as long as you move them around. A Pokemon you have sent out will follow you, so you have to be on your toes in a trainer battle.
  • While you can move about in a trainer battle, you are not allowed to dodge or sprint.
  • Trainer Pokemon do not target you in a battle.
  • However, in the Z-A Royale, you can sneak up on other Trainers and their Pokemon and attack. This gives you a distinct advantage in the upcoming battle.
