What Does the Tethered Mutation Do?
Befitting its name, the Tethered Mutation essentially tethers the affected pet to you. This means your pet will always stick close to you and apply its buffs around your location. The pet mutations can help you roughly target specific plants in your garden with the buffs from your pet’s traits.
Which Pets Are Best for the Tethered Mutation?

A lot of pets in Grow a Garden only affect nearby plants or pets. This mutation works well if you want to control those pets. Here are some examples:
- Any pet that imparts mutations on nearby plants, such as the Butterfly, Dragonfly, Kitsune, etc.
- Pets that boost plants’ or fruit’s nearby growth, such as all cats, Toucan, Hedgehog, Cow, Pig, etc.
- You can also use it on pets that affect other pets, such as the French Fry Ferret or Tarantula Hawk.
You can also use it for purely cosmetic purposes and use the mutation on a pet you like so that it follows you around.

How To Get the Tethered Pet Mutation

As of the current Grow a Garden patch, the only way to get the mutation is by using the Toffee Tether. It is a Prismatic-tier gear released during the Garden Ghoul 2 update. Feeding it to a pet gives it the Tethered Mutation. It is a rare gear, with only a 0.95% chance to drop from the Halloween Gear Box. You will probably need to open several to get the Toffee Tether. Here are a few ways to get the Halloween Gear Box:
- Buy it from the Ghostly Gadgets Shop in the Halloween Market.
- Get it as a reward for contributing to the Witch’s Brew.
- You can get it from the new Digging Event or the Dead Tree’s Quest as well.
- There is a 5% chance the Ancient Jack O Lantern NPC will drop a Halloween Gear Box when you submit a spooky-type crop as well.
