Learn how to use Gyarados and its Mega in the competitive scene of Pokemon Legends Z-A with information about its moveset and nature.

In Pokemon Legends Z-A, Gyarados remains one of the best Pokemon for any trainer to use. Ever since its introduction in Generation 1, Gyarados has been a great physical attacker. This was the case even before the physical/special split happened in Generation 4, and it could use physical Water moves. And it even got a Mega Evolution in Generation 6. So let’s see how to use Gyarados and its Mega in battle.
Best Gyarados Moveset in Pokemon Legends Z-A

These are the moves you want to use on your Gyarados, especially if you are looking to Mega Evolve it later.
- Waterfall
- Crunch
- Earthquake
- Thunder Wave
Gyarados learns Waterfall at Level 27 and Crunch at Level 33 by leveling up. TM069 for Earthquake is given to you by Mable as a Level 34 Research Reward. TM008 for Thunder Wave can be found in Wild Zone 1 by breaking rocks near a ladder and burning the brambles on the roof to get it.
After Mega Evolution, Gyarados swaps its secondary Flying typing for Dark typing. So now it gets STAB on Crunch when using the move, dealing more damage in the process. The plan is to use Thunder Wave to slow down the opponent’s Pokemon and then use the three attacking moves as they recharge. The Gyaradosite can be purchased from Quasartico Inc. for 240 Mega Shards.
Best Gyarados Nature in Pokemon Legends Z-A
Gyarados can work with either an Adamant (+Atk, -SpA) or a Jolly (+Spe, -SpA) nature. The latter is valid if you want a faster physical attacker. But the former is more useful if you want a tank, as Mega Gyarados has more than decent bulk (95/109/130).
If you don’t have a Gyarados with either nature, you can use a Nature Mint to alter it. A vendor sells the Adamant mint at Rogue Sector 1. The Jolly Mint can be purchased at a store in Vert Sector 6.
Gyarados Stats and Location

You can get a Magikarp as early as Wild Zone 1. Level it up to 20 and evolve it into a Gyarados. Gyarados’s stats are as follows:

Mega Gyarados’s stats:
