A Ninja Gaiden game is as good as its boss fights. That’s the notion which the latest title in the series, Ninja Gaiden 4, took very seriously. Much like the past Ninja Gaiden games, Ninja Gaiden 4 is home to some of the best boss fights in the character action genre. Furthermore, the game is also significantly longer than past Ninja Gaiden games, and as a result, features more bosses than other mainline titles in the series.

While there are some repeated boss encounters, most of them are unique enemies with vastly different movesets. Furthermore, much like the past games, bosses in Ninja Gaiden 4 are incredibly challenging. In fact, some of the early bosses in the game are the toughest encounters in the entire story, particularly the Kitsune Courtesan.

That said, here’s a list of all the main story bosses in Ninja Gaiden 4, in the order of their main story appearance.

There are a total of 20 Chapters in Ninja Gaiden 4 (including Chapter 00). And save for the prologue chapter (Chapter 00), every main story mission concludes with a boss fight. That said, there are also some exclusive bosses outside of the story. However, those are mostly relegated to New Game Plus Challenges and Purgatory trials. Here are all the main story bosses in Ninja Gaiden 4, and their chapters:

  • D.D.O. Commander (Chapter 1)
  • D.D.O. Proto-Goliath (Chapter 2)
  • Kitsune Courtesan (Chapter 3)
  • Sanzeon (Chapter 5)
  • Kurobo (Chapter 7)
  • Veilotl (Chapter 9)
  • Cetus (Chapter 10)
  • D-1018 Chario (Chapter 11)
  • D.D.O. Commander – Second Encounter (Chapter 12)
  • D.D.O. Proto-Goliath – Second Encounter (Chapter 12)
  • Kagachi (Chapter 13)
  • Achilles (Chapter 13)
  • Achilles – Continued (Chapter 14)
  • Cetus – Second Encounter (Chapter 15)
  • Kitsune Courtesan – Second Encounter (Chapter 16)
  • Kurobo – Second Encounter (Chapter 17)
  • Totyos (Chapter 18)
  • Ryu (Chapter 19)
  • Dark Dragon (Chapter 19)
  • Dark Dragon – Phantom Form (Chapter 19)

The game’s story is essentially divided into two halves, each focusing on its respective protagonists. The first half of the story is focused on Yakumo and his mission to resurrect the Dark Dragon in order to purify it. The second half is focused on Ryu Hayabusa, who initially works towards stopping Yakumo (and Seori), but later joins them in their mission.

The structure of Ninja Gaiden 4 is very similar to Devil May Cry 4. However, unlike DMC 4, Ninja Gaiden 4’s boss fights are way less repetitive. Even the ones that do show up twice have some new attack or “gimmick” to make the revisit refreshing.
