Everything you need to know about the first boss fight, DDO Commander, in Ninja Gaiden 4, and how to defeat it.
Ninja Gaiden 4, much like its predecessors, features some really challenging boss fights. While the game is significantly more accessible than past titles in the series, it’s still an incredibly challenging action game, with some of the most difficult boss fights in the genre. This fact is best exemplified by the very first main story boss in Ninja Gaiden 4, the DDO Commander.
A cyborg-samurai, the DDO Commander is a force to be reckoned with. Although the boss has a limited moveset (compared to other bosses in the game), it’s still an incredibly challenging enemy. Thankfully, the game offers you more than enough tools to easily defeat the DDO Commander.

Overview of the DDO Commander in Ninja Gaiden 4
The DDO Commander is the first major boss in Ninja Gaiden 4. While he’s not particularly difficult, even on Hard, he does require you to be precise with your dodges. The boss is essentially a more powerful version of the elite DDO Soldiers. The DDO Commander basically has two combos that you need to be aware of – wide slash and charged slash.
Both these attacks have 4-5 chained attacks, which can easily kill Yakumo. However, these attacks are also slow enough to give you ample time to parry or dodge. Ideally, you want to dodge these attacks. However, we highly recommend practicing Bloodbind parry before heading into this boss fight. Parries basically trivialize this boss fight.
Unlike the other main story bosses, DDO Commander is a single-phase boss fight. As such, with the right combos, you can easily defeat the boss, even on the Hard preset.
Tips To Easily Defeat the DDO Commander
Here are some tips to easily defeat the DDO Commander in Ninja Gaiden 4:
- While the DDO Commander is intimidating, especially due to his poise and tendency to charge his combos, it’s a rather easy boss fight. The DDO Commander is basically the game’s way to teach the importance of defensive combos to new players. For this fight, you need to be aware of three things: dodges, parries, and Bloodbind counters.
- The DDO Commander’s most lethal attacks are the charged combos. However, you can easily stagger the boss out of his charging animation with a Bloodbind attack. Furthermore, Ultimate Attacks also break the boss’s poise.
- Most of DDO Commander’s attacks can be parried or dodged quite easily. We do recommend grabbing the counterattack skills (Fatal Flash) from Tyran before heading to this boss fight.
- If you’re having trouble with the DDO Commander, make sure to use the items (consumables) to refill your HP or get a temporary attack/defense buff.
