Ninja Gaiden 4 is a difficult game, which shouldn’t come as a surprise if you’ve played any of the previous Ninja Gaiden games. From enemy gauntlets to bosses, everything in the game is designed to push the players to their limits. However, while the game can feel frustratingly difficult at times, it’s never unfair. As Yakumo, you’re given plenty of tools to dispatch every enemy and boss on your path efficiently.

One such tool is the Berserker mode, which isn’t unlike the Devil Trigger from Devil May Cry games. However, unlike Devil Trigger, which lets you button mash your way to victory, the Berserker mode is much more nuanced. It’s not your “get out of jail for free card.” Instead, it’s an extension of Yakumo’s Bloodraven form, with dedicated combos.

Here’s everything you need to know about the Berserker mode in Ninja Gaiden 4, and how to properly use it.

The Berserker mode is unlocked right at the start of the game, in Chapter 00. It’s essentially unlocked as part of Yakumo’s Bloodraven form, but it isn’t explained all too well, at least not during the main story chapters. However, Berserker mode is much more than just an expansion. It essentially opens up new ways to use the Obliterate technique, which basically lets you one-shot smaller enemies.

Furthermore, if used right, the Berserker mode can deal a ton of damage to bosses and even recharge almost instantly. To activate the Berserker mode, you need to press – L3 + R3. However, before you can activate the Berserker mode, you need to fill the Berserker gauge. There are a plethora of ways to fill up the Berserker gauge – parrying attacks, using Bloodraven form to kill enemies, etc.

However, the easiest way to refill the Berserker gauge is to perform the Ultimate Technique. Essentially, whenever you hit an enemy with a Bloodbind Ninjutsu or kill them with Obliterate, they will drop Blood Essence. If you hold the heavy attack button in the presence of a Blood Essence Orb, it will instantly charge your Ultimate Technique.

Using UT nets you a big chunk of Berserker energy. AS for the Berserker mode, it has very specific use cases; you’re not supposed to spam it whenever it’s recharged.

There are two main scenarios where you will find the Berserker mode extremely useful:

Boss Fights (Multi-Phase)

For multi-phase boss fights, we highly recommend using the instant Obliterate, which can be performed by locking on to the boss and pressing L3 + R3 in Berserker mode. This will initiate an Obliterate combo and deal a ton of damage to the boss. In late-game multi-phase boss fights, you can basically perform this combo 2-3 times, which is quite helpful.

Enemy Gauntlet (Thinning the Herd)

As for enemy gauntlets, it’s best to keep the Berserker mode saved for the elites. Also, it’s best not to use the instant Obliterate technique here. Instead, we recommend choosing a group of enemies and using a charged heavy attack to Obliterate multiple enemies at once. This helps with thinning the crowd, giving you more breathing room.
