Onix and Steelix in Pokemon Legends Z-A are two Pokemon that you can catch and add to your collection. Onix is a Rock/Ground type, whereas Steelix is a Steel/Ground type Pokemon. While you can only get Onix by catching it out in the world, there are multiple ways to acquire Steelix. In the following article, we’ll dive deep into how you acquire both these creatures, and what their stats are.
How To Get Onix and Steelix in Pokemon Legends Z-A
Getting Onix

You can catch Onix by visiting and exploring Wild Zone 14. This area becomes accessible once you’ve completed Main Mission 19: Reaching Rank D. After entering the wild zone, you’ll need to run through the dust piles for the Pokemon in question to appear. Fight it with one your own party members. After defeating it, you can catch it like any other wild Pokemon.
Here’s a look at the Onix’s stats:
- HP: 35
- Attack: 45
- Defense: 160
- Special Attack: 30
- Special Defense: 45
- Speed: 70
- Total Combat Points: 385
Getting Steelix

Once you have an Onix, you can evolve it into a Steelix. However, there’s a distinct process that you’ll have to follow. Firstly, you need to acquire a Metal Coat. Once you have that, make your Onix hold the Metal Coat. While it’s doing that, you need to trade it to another player using the game’s Link Trade system. This will evolve your Onix into a Steelix, making it one of the trade evolutions in the game.
Apart from this method, you can also get you hands on the Alpha variant of Steelix during Main Mission 40: The One That Gives. However, keep in mind that this is a level 70 creature, and you’ll need to either match its level or be at a higher level to catch it easily. Once you bring it down to low health, keep chucking Ultra Balls toward it to finally capture it. However, you’ll only get once chance at grabbing the Pokemon during the mission. So, we suggest making a manual save before the fight begins. This will enable you to retry the capture process even if you fail the first few times. If you fail, simply exit the game completely. Then, restart Pokemon Legends Z-A and continue from the last manual save. You should be able to start the fight once more in this manner.
