Escaping Avernus is fraught with dangers, so should you make the extra effort to save Hope in Baldur’s Gate 3?
In Baldur’s Gate 3, Hope is a mysterious character you won’t meet unless you’re brave enough to defy Raphael and invade his home during Act 3. She may not be important to the larger, overarching story of the game, but her plight is meaningful. You’ll have to go out of your way to help her, but she can return the favor in the final fight. Moreover, you can earn a great piece of gear as a reward at the end of her quest. Choosing to save Hope can significantly impact your chances of success against Raphael, and you will want every edge you can get in that fight.

Finding Hope in Baldur’s Gate 3
The first step to finding Hope in Baldur’s Gate 3 is locating a way to enter Raphael’s home through a portal to Avernus, which you can find at the Devil’s Fee in the Lower City. When you finally reach Act 3, you can encounter Raphael at Sharess’ Caress in Wrym’s Crossing. In your conversation, he will reveal he has the Orphic Hammer, which you need to save Orpheus.
You can take the deal, which will require you to give him the Crown of Karsus, or refuse. In either case, you can then choose to try and find your way into his home. If you’ve refused the deal, you can steal the Hammer. On the other hand, if you agreed to the deal, you can steal the Contract instead.
To enter Raphael’s house you will need to use the ritual circle on the second floor of the Devil’s Fee to create a portal into Avernus. There are a couple of different ways you can enter the House of Hope. The first option is to make a deal with the shopkeeper Helsik, which will require you to pay her lots of gold or agree to get the Gauntlets of Hill Giant Strength for her.
Secondly, another option is to steal the ritual items you need from her. This will require a party member who has a high Sleight of Hand skill. You’ll need to steal the Ritual Pouch which should hold all of the items you’ll need. Additionally, you can steal Grimoire from her, which will tell you how to execute the ritual.
Place Items in the Ritual Circle to Open the Portal
Head upstairs and placate the ‘Thirsty Ward’ at the top with some water in order to disarm the trap. Then, head into Helsik’s rooms to find the ritual circle. Place the Skull, Coin of Mammon, Diamond, Incense, and Infernal Marble as shown in the image above. Finally, you can use the portal to enter Avernus.
The large chamber you first appear in only has one door, and as you approach it a projection of Hope will appear to speak with you. She will offer to help guide you through the house, and ask you to save her. Agreeing will start the entry for the Save Hope quest in your journal.
Choosing to Save Hope in Baldur’s Gate 3
To save Hope in Baldur’s Gate 3, you will first need the Orphic Hammer to break her chains. If you agreed to Raphael’s deal, then you should already have it. If you didn’t, then you will need to steal it. However, either way, you will want to wait until the very end to save Hope because this will lead to a fight with Raphael. Before that, you will want to locate and steal as much of the good gear in the House of Hope as you can find. We recommend taking items from the center vault and visiting the Boudoir first. Steal the items in the Archive last.
Notable loot in the House of Hope includes:
- Helldusk Helmet
- Helldusk Gloves
- Staff of Spellpower
- Orphic Hammer
- Amulet of Greater Health
- Gauntlets of Hill Giant Strength
When you are ready, the final item to steal is either the Soul-Sworn Contract or the Orphic Hammer. Both are located in the same spot in the Archives. After stealing it, alarms will trigger and you will have to fight your way across the house to get to the Prison Hatchway on the east side where Hope is held. Inside the prison you will face two Spectators and a lot of Vengeful Imps. Send a strong melee character with Misty Step and the Hammer to smash the crystals and free Hope.
Consequences of Saving Hope in BG3
The immediate consequence of freeing Hope is that you will have to fight Raphael and his minions to escape the House of Hope and be free of him forever. Korilla (Hope’s sister) and Yurgir will be at his side, along with a lot of lesser cambions and imps. However, if you saved Yurgir back in Act 2 he will switch sides and fight with you. Furthermore, there is also a chance to pass a high DC Persuasion check to convince him regardless.
Final Fight Against Raphael
The final fight against Raphael is a challenging one, and a core part of the strategy for defeating him is taking out the four Pillar of Souls in the four corners of the room. Deactivated when you first enter the House of Hope, they will come alive now and empower Raphael with strength. Each one you destroy will weaken them, therefore they should be a priority. A Fighter equipped with the Orphic Hammer, using Extra Attack and Action Surge should drink a Potion of Speed and use the Misty Step spell to take out more than one at a time.
Additionally, Hope will join your party for this fight as a temporary companion, and as a Cleric she has powerful healing spells and access to the Divine Intervention single-use action. In a pinch, you can use this to restore nearby allies as if they had Long Rested or summon the legendary Devotee’s Mace.
However, it can be difficult to keep her alive, which you will need to prioritize to successfully save Hope in Baldur’s Gate 3. The Globe of Invulnerability spell is very useful for protecting her if you have access to it. If not, then keep Hope at the back of the fight. Moreover, you can even try to send her back outside the room and close the door.
After taking down the Pillars, target the smaller allies aiding Raphael. Finally, it will be just your party against the powerful cambion and you should be able to focus him down. Defeating Raphael will reward you with the Helldusk Armour.
Save Hope Quest Reward
Finally, if you can keep Hope alive through the fight against Raphael, then you will complete the Save Hope quest and will be automatically rewarded with the Gloves of Soul Catching. This pair of legendary gloves is the best arm gear in Baldur’s Gate 3 for the Monk class. Each armed hit from these gloves will deal an additional 1-10 points of Force damage to your enemy. With the right build, Monks can hit several times per turn, meaning these gloves will deal out a lot of extra damage cumulatively.
Furthermore, it can also heal the wearer passively, for 10 points once per turn. Alternatively, you can forego the healing to gain Advantage on your attack rolls and saving throws instead. Finally, these gloves will boost your Constitution ability score by two points, up to a limit of 20.
