Frostpunk 2 is arriving on September 20, 2024, on PC and current-gen console platforms. Announced three years back, the sequel to the BAFTA-nominated survival title was initially set to arrive in July 2024. Post an early access demo and its feedback, the developers decided to push the release date back by about two months.
Frostpunk 2 Will Arrive on PC and Current-Gen Platforms
Frostpunk 2 will be playable on PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5. Xbox Game Pass owners will get to play the game on day one after launch. It will not be available on previous-gen consoles (Xbox One and PlayStation 4), at least for now. In contrast, Frostpunk (the 2018 title) is available on PC, PS4, Xbox One, and Mac, with an iOS and Android port reportedly in the works.
Depending on the success of the launch, we might see the upcoming sequel arrive on other popular platforms as well. While the age of the previous-gen consoles can make such ports tricky, the Frostpunk 2 system requirements do not necessitate high-end hardware. Furthermore, the game will feature mod support through the FrostKit Tool from day one.
The City Must Not Fall
Frostpunk 2’s timeline is set three decades after the first game. The protagonist is given charge of “a resource-hungry metropolis where expansion and the search for new sources of power is an unavoidable reality.” While the central mechanic of ensuring the survival of the city remains the same, the developers have also expanded on what players can do in-game.
Jakub Stokaiski, game Co-Director and Design Director at 11 bit studios, stated:
“But inner turmoils, sparked by rising social differences, mean that players will be facing new kinds of threats. We use a post-apocalyptic setup to tell a meaningful story about human ambition. Because ultimately, what can end us is not nature itself – it’s human nature.”
Deluxe Edition owners get to dive into the game on September 17, 2024, three days before its full release.
