Marc-Alexis Côté, the Executive Producer for the Assassin’s Creed franchise, recently announced on social media that the Assassin’s Creed Shadows release is getting postponed from November 15, 2024, to February 14, 2025. This has disappointed Ubisoft and Assassin’s Creed fans as they have to wait for three more months.
However, the good news is that there are other Assassin’s Creed games one can play in the meantime. In this article, we have listed the five best Assassin’s Creed games you can play currently.
1. Assassin’s Creed II
Assassin’s Creed II is one of the best games from the franchise overall. Moreover, it has a Metascore of 90, which is the highest in the franchise. It released in 2009. It takes place in the 15th century in Italy and features realistic portrayals of locations such as Florence, Venice, Monteriggioni, San Gimignano, and Forlì.
The game introduced more variations in taking down enemies, like having more options for hiding and distracting. It also had better combat mechanisms, with the introduction of smoke bombs, poisoned blades, and a hidden wrist gun. The game included historical figures like Machiavelli, Da Vinci, and the Medici family. In addition to all these, this game introduced one of the most loved protagonists from the entire franchise, Ezio Auditore da Firenze.
2. Assassin’s Creed: Unity
The eighth installment of the franchise, Assassin’s Creed: Unity, released in 2014. Ubisoft brought 18th-century Paris during the French Revolution to life with enhanced graphics. The NPCs in the game offer detailed interactions as they respond to the player’s unique actions and movements. The game also has a unique four-person co-op multiplayer mode, which is not present in any other games in the franchise. The introduction of the crouch button in the game paved the way for more cover-to-cover-based stealth action.
The mythical Swords of Eden was first introduced in AC Unity, which made for combat with immense power. Unity brings back the original Assasin’s Creed elements, such as stealth, assassination, and parkour, in correct proportion. The game has excellent storytelling for Arno Dorian’s character, from tragedy to betrayal. Unity has challenging duels and sword fights.
Though the game had some bugs and glitches at the initial launch, it is now quite smooth for players.
3. Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag
Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag, the sixth installment in the franchise, was released in 2013. The combat mechanisms were significantly improved to enhance the overall playing experience. The players take control of the pirate Edward Kenway, and the gameplay is focused more on pirate adventure rather than the usual assassins and Templars formula. Black Flag takes you to diverse locations as you travel on Edward Kenway’s brig Jackdaw.
The ship-based combat and travel were executed well, and the game is quite unique in the franchise. The game has a highly detailed open-world environment setup, with activities like side quests, hunting, and crafting.
4. Assassin’s Creed Odyssey
Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, the eleventh installment in the franchise, is one of the largest in the franchise. The game includes more RPG elements in a larger open world. Odyssey’s female protagonist Kassandra is a standout character and offers more emotional depth than the male protagonist Alexios. Her interactions with the supporting characters have more impact compared to the other games.
Set in the world of Ancient Greece, Odyssey has up to nine multiple different endings. Fighting with mythical creatures like Cyclops, Medusa, Minotaur, and Sphinx makes the game more interesting. Odyssey’s overall design and storytelling make it the best in the trilogy.
5. Assassin’s Creed Valhalla
Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, released in 2020, is the twelfth installment in the franchise and the most profitable game in Ubisoft’s history The combat dynamics were revamped to add depth to the gameplay. By upgrading the settlements, players can have access to more features and upgrades in the game.
Valhalla did extraordinary work of blending historical fantasy with mythology. The game features Norse mythology characters such as Loki, Thor, Odin, and Freyja. Set in the ninth century in Norway and England, players take the role of Eivor, a skilled Vikings warrior whose gender can be changed.
The game focuses more on raid-based combat, and players can use a diverse range of weapons. However, stealth combat is still an option. Valhalla introduced innovative new features like the Raven mode and the ability to call the Crew during raids. The connection between the Desmond Miles and Layla Hassan story arcs also appreciated by fans.
