Does Sosuke Aizen die in Bleach? Everything you need to know about the former 5th Division Captain of the Gotei 13.
Does Sosuke Aizen die in Bleach? As any Bleach fan like you would know, Sosuke Aizen is a recurring antagonist in the series. He had been a thorn in Ichigo Kurosaki’s side since the first story arc. He is a dangerous character to meddle with.
Keeping that in mind, you would remember that Sosuke Aizen faked his death at the start of the series. He wanted to retrieve the Hogyoku and faked his death with some help from Gin to accomplish his mission and later ascended to Hueco Mundo. Fortunately for Aizen, he not only accomplished his mission but also became one with Hogyoku. Nevertheless, he was later defeated at the hands of Ichigo Kurosaki.
The point to be noted is that, despite being defeated, Aizen was not dead. So, does Aizen die in Bleach manga, or does he stay alive till the end of the series? Fortunately for all Aizen fans, the former Fifth Division Captain did not die in Bleach manga and has remained alive till now.
What Is Aizen’s Current State in Bleach?
Sosuke Aizen is currently alive in both the anime and the manga. In the anime, as you fans would know, due to his immortal nature, Aizen is imprisoned. But given Soul Society’s dire situation, the new Captain-Commander of the Gotei 13 went to the underground prison Muken to get his help to defeat Yhwach and Quincy. The problem was that given Aizen’s power, Central 46 had Shunsui Kyoraku store the keys inside him and could only use three. Shunsui used the three keys to unlock Sosuke Aizen’s mouth, left eye, and ankles.
Soon after, the new Captain-Commander instructed Aizen to sit on the seat behind him, following which he would be transferred to Soul Society’s surface. While Shunsui Kyoraku tried to bribe Aizen with the chance to get some fresh air from Soul Society, Aizen was certain that Yhwach had practically destroyed Soul Society.
As for the manga, after helping Ichigo Kurosaki and the Soul Reapers in the final battle against Yhwach, Sosuke Aizen was imprisoned again. While fans believed that they had seen the last of him, the antagonist was again shown in the final chapter as he sensed the final remnants of Yhwach’s Reiatsu had disappeared. With that, he is shown to recall the Quincy King’s final words about how his defeat meant the continuation of death and the fear accompanying it.
How Was Aizen Defeated?
In the anime, Sosuke Aizen was defeated by Ichigo Kurosaki and Kisuke Urahara. After Ichigo activated his new form technique, Saigo no Getsuga Tensho, he attacked Aizen with Mugetsu. This attack nearly defeated Aizen; however, the Hogyoku healed his injuries. Just then, an increase in energy spike from Aizen’s chest saw him get sealed. The one behind this was Urahara, who used Kido to seal Aizen, knowing that Hogyoku would keep him alive. Soon after, i.e., 10 days in Soul Society, Sosuke Aizen was sentenced to Muken for 20,000 years and was imprisoned there.
As for the manga, Aizen helped create an opening for Ichigo Kurosaki against Yhwach by using his Kyouka Suigetsu. Even before Ichigo entered the battlefield, Aizen tricked the Quincy King Yhwach into believing that he was Ichigo and was defeated at the hands of the Quincy King. At that moment, the real Ichigo cut down Yhwach. Soon after, Yhwach returned as he engulfed Aizen. This time Ichigo defeated Yhwach for real, following which Aizen was sent back to the Muken.
Conclusion
So, effectively, after fusing himself with the Hogyoku, Sosuke Aizen had become immortal. This meant that no matter what enemy he faced, he was never going to die. He could be severely injured but would be healed again due to the Hokgyoku’s influence on his body. This was seen during Aizen’s fights against Ichigo Kurosaki and Yhwach.
The reason Hogyoku made Sosuke Aizen immortal was because it was in its nature to safeguard itself. Hence, after fusing with Aizen, the Hogyoku needed to keep Aizen immortal to safeguard its existence along with him. Therefore, Sosuke Aizen will never die in the series, even if he were to complete his imprisonment sentence of 20,000 years in Muken.
The only way Aizen could meet his end is if mangaka Tite Kubo introduced a story development that rendered the Hogyoku useless. If such a development were to ever be introduced in the manga, the plot could see Aizen die. With a sequel manga encapsulating the No Breathes From Hell Arc rumored to be in the works by the mangaka, this development is not entirely outside the realm of possibilities. Hopefully, the manga creator will soon surprise fans with the sequel manga.
