Is Yuji Itadori related to Ryomen Sukuna in Jujutsu Kaisen? Everything to know about the relationship between the protagonist and antagonist.
Is Yuji Itadori related to Ryomen Sukuna in Jujutsu Kaisen? The fanbase has theorized about this possibility for years since the manga’s debut. A major reason behind this is Shonen manga tropes that depict a relationship or past between the protagonist and antagonist. This essentially creates some depth in their relationship.
So, is Yuji related to Sukuna? Yes, Yuji Itadori is related to Ryomen Sukuna. While they are not directly related, they are related in spirit. This relationship can also be compared to one that is shared between an uncle and his nephew. So, how are Yuji and Sukuna related to each other? How are the two characters related despite being born in different eras?
What Is Sukuna and Yuji’s Relationship in Jujutsu Kaisen?
As revealed by Ryomen Sukuna to Uraume in Jujutsu Kaisen chapter 257, Yuji Itadori was the son of his other half. Sukuna was seemingly going to be born alongside a twin brother. But as his mother was starving, he did not get enough nutrition. Hence, he chose to eat his other half to prevent himself from starving. Following his brother’s death, his soul seemingly wandered and was reincarnated in Yuji Itadori’s father, Jin Itadori’s body.
Thus, considering that Jin Itadori’s soul was effectively that of Ryomen Sukuna’s deceased twin brother, Yuji Itadori was Ryomen Sukuna’s nephew in spirit. While they can be called “blood-related,” they are only related through the soul of Sukuna’s deceased twin. Other than that, they seemingly have no lineage between them.
Kenjaku’s Plan for Sukuna and Yuji
As depicted by Wasuke Itadori’s dialogue in Jujutsu Kaisen chapter 143, Kaori Itadori had seemingly passed away some time before the birth of Yuji Itadori. Thus, wanting a child with his wife, Jin Itadori seemingly allowed Kenjaku to take over her. This effectively allowed them to conceive Yuji Itadori.
Earlier, it was suggested that Kenjaku had given birth to Yuji as he wanted to create a vessel for the King of Curses. But at the time, the fans were left confused as to why Kenjaku chose Jin Itadori as his partner. However, after the manga revealed the relationship between Yuji and Sukuna, it became clear that Kenjaku chose Jin Itadori to conceive Sukuna’s vessel because Jin was closely related to Sukuna in spirit.
Therefore, as absurd as it may sound, Kenjaku planned to bring back Ryomen Sukuna by creating a vessel for him conceived through the union between himself and the soul of Sukuna’s deceased twin brother.
How His Connection With Sukuna Helped Yuji in Jujutsu Kaisen?
Unbeknownst to Yuji Itadori, his connection with Ryomen Sukuna meant that he had the potential to be as strong as him. As seen in Jujutsu Kaisen chapter 257, Sukuna was technically Yuji’s uncle. Hence, upon learning about this relationship, Uraume deduced that Yuji had the potential to be equal to Sukuna.
As far as abilities are concerned, Yuji’s relationship with Sukuna allowed him to use Shrine. This was also seen in chapter 257, as right after Yuji hit Sukuna with a Black Flash, the awakened state brought forth Sukuna’s own cursed technique engraved within Yuji, Shrine. That said, there are differences between Sukuna and Yuji’s Shrine.
Sukuna can effectively use Shrine without touching his opponent or even spending a single moment. But that is not the case for Yuji’s Shrine. Unlike Sukuna’s Shrine, Yuji creates dashed lines with scissors on anything he touches. The object in question is then cut along these lines. Evidently, not only is Yuji’s Shrine slow but also warns the people around him what is going to be cut. On top of that, as per the manga, due to its recent awakening, Yuji’s output for Shrine is low.
Yuji’s relationship with Sukuna also granted him the Dismatle technique. However, Yuji further increased the technique’s effectiveness with a binding vow. Hence, it could be used to narrow down its target to the boundary between Sukuna and Megumi’s Soul.
Conclusion
So, yes, Yuji Itadori is related to the King of Curses, Ryomen Sukuna. While they are not really blood-related, in spirit, Sukuna was Yuji’s uncle, as his brother’s soul dwelled within Jin Itadori’s body. While it may seem absurd to some fans, this was also the reason why Yuji acted as a compatible vessel for the King of Curses. Had Yuji had no connection to Sukuna, there was a good chance that the King of Curses would have gone berserk the moment Yuji swallowed his first finger.
The good thing is that this relationship also made Yuji Itadori strong and capable of using Dismantle, which is what led to the King of Curses’ demise.
