The Hashiras in the Demon Slayer series are some of the most popular characters among fans. They are unanimously loved by the entire fanbase because of their contributions to the organization. Additionally, witnessing their abilities on the screen as they take on the most powerful demons is quite exciting to watch. In fact, these characters do exceptionally well in character polls that are initiated by fans on various social media platforms.

There is absolutely no doubt that these Hashiras are skilled. However, their fate in the Demon Slayer series saddened the manga readers. At the time of writing, the anime fanbase has witnessed the death of one Hashira already – Kyojuro Rengoku, the Flame Hashira. The follow-up question that most people have is this: did all Hashiras die in Demon Slayer? No, all Hashiras don’t die towards the end of the series.

However, there are only two Hashiras who survive towards the end of the manga – Giyu Tomioka (Water Hashira) and Sanemi Shinazugawa (Wind Hashira). The rest die in various battles that take place in the Infinity Castle arc and the Sunrise Countdown arc.

The Hashiras are the most skilled demon hunters to exist. They are the finest fighters who can quite literally go toe-to-toe with a few Upper Moon demons. In fact, Muichiro managed to defeat an Upper Moon 5 demon all by himself. They have absolute mastery over combat and have spent years refining their physical attributes. If this is the case, then how did the Hashiras die in Demon Slayer? The Hashiras died because of the sheer difference in their power levels from those of the Upper Moon demons.

The Upper Moon demons have lived for centuries feasting on human flesh. Furthermore, these demons have some of the highest concentrations of Muzan’s blood. Their Blood Demon Art is hard to counter, and there is very little that the human body can do against such creatures. Demon Slayer has always laid emphasis on teamwork for this very reason. Hashiras died because their opponents were some of the toughest demons who managed to land consecutive hits to various vital spots.

Kyojuro Rengoku was the first Hashira to die in the series. Akaza, the Upper Moon 3 demon, killed Rengoku during a fight in the Mugen Train arc. Following this, the Demon Slayer Corps took down a couple of Upper Moon demons, and the demon hunters miraculously lived to tell the tale. However, the Infinity Castle arc featured the deaths of two very important Hashiras – Muichiro Tokito (Mist Hashira) and Shinobu Kocho (Insect Hashira). Doma, the Upper Moon 2 demon, consumed Shinobu Kocho and killed her in the Infinity Castle arc. However, Shinobu willingly sacrificed herself to weaken the demon, all thanks to the Wisteria poison that was flowing through her body.

Muichiro Tokito, the Mist Hashira, was on the receiving end of an attack from Kokushibo, the Upper Moon 1 demon. The demon attacked his vital spot, and he succumbed to his injuries. Following this, we saw the deaths of Obanai Iguro (Serpent Hashira), Mitsuri Kanroji (Love Hashira), and Gyomei Himejima (Stone Hashira). Gyomei and Sanemi managed to defeat Kokushibo, while Tanjiro and Giyu defeated Akaza, the Upper Moon 3 demon. Following this, all the aforementioned characters took on Muzan. They succumbed to their injuries after receiving numerous attacks from the Demon King.

Comparing the Strengths of the Hashiras and Upper Moon Demons

The series established the fact that humans are physically inferior to demons. The latter are enhanced species that have elemental abilities. When this ability is paired with a massive improvement in their physical abilities, there is very little that a human being can do to them. However, the Hashiras are some of the most elite fighters who bridged this gap. Hashiras have the ability to use Breathing Techniques, which enhance their physical attributes.

Furthermore, they have complete mastery of their weapons – something that most demons lack. Additionally, most Hashiras have access to the Demon Slayer Mark. This improves their physical abilities further and allows them to perceive the bodily functions of demons. This, in turn, allows them to react quicker since they can see the twitches of a muscle fiber, giving them the ability to predict their movements.

On the other hand, Upper Moon demons have access to supernatural abilities called Blood Demon Art. This manifests in various forms. Most of them are able to manipulate a certain element while infusing it with extremely potent venom. Doma was able to manipulate ice and snow to such an extent that breathing in those particles poisoned the lungs slowly. On the other hand, Gyutaro was able to manipulate blood by solidifying it and controlling the trajectory of these projectiles.

Structural Hierarchy of the Demon Slayer Corps

The leader of the Demon Slayer Corps is referred to as the Oyakata-sama. They are descendants of the Ubuyashiki Clan who have the gift of foresight. This in turn allows them to manage resources efficiently by assigning the right amount of demon hunters to a mission. Demon Slayers, Cultivators, Kakushi, and the Swordsmiths report to the leader of the Corps. Demon Slayers are the swordsmen who take on demons during various missions.

The Cultivators are people who scout young prospects and nurture their combat skills by teaching them a certain Breathing Technique. The Kakushi is the organization’s support staff. They ensure the safe transportation of demon hunters for rehabilitation. They also carry out rescue missions. The Swordsmiths are those who have absolute mastery in forging and creating blades with the help of specific ores that can kill demons. They are located in a small village, whose location is unknown except to a select few Kakushi. The Demon Slayers are further split into 11 positions – Mizunoto, Mizunoe, Kanoto, Kanoe, Tsuchinoto, Tsuchinoe, Hinoto, Hinoe, Kinoto, Kinoe, and the Hashira. Mizunoto are the weakest demon hunters, while Hashira are the strongest.

Conclusion

Not all Hashiras died towards the end of the Demon Slayer manga series. However, only two active Hashiras remained. Tengen Uzui and Sakonji Urokodaki were also alive due to his retirement from the organization. The rest of them died in battle. That being said, their deaths were not in vain, as Muzan was defeated and the human race lived peacefully.
