Jujutsu Kaisen season 2 gave the fans a banquet of action-packed episodes, from Gojo going full force to Sukuna and Jogo’s high-level curses and the showdown between Yuji and Mahito. Well, some of these fights are more gut-wrenching than others when it comes to Mahito.

Mahito is a cursed spirit that emerged from humans’ fear and hatred against each other. A cursed spirit’s power is tied directly to the intensity of the negative emotion they originate from. Considering these two factors, no wonder he becomes a strong villain in the series.

Not only that, Mahito is also responsible for the death of one of the fans’ favorite characters, Nanami Kento. This makes him memorable for his strength and impact.

However, just before the end of Jujutsu Kaisen season 2, Yuji managed to corner Mahito. When it seemed like he would meet his end at the hand of the Sukuna’s vessel, someone else stepped in and took his life. From the outside, Mahito’s killer looked like Suguru Geto, Gojo’s best friend from the past. But was it truly Geto?

First, let’s go over how Mahito’s fate ended. Mahito’s climatic confrontation in Shibuya with Yuji began when he murdered Nanami Kento, a first-class sorcerer who mentored Yuji. Not only that, Mahito fatally wounded Nobara, another person who was close to Yuji. At this point, Yuji was close to giving up.

Thankfully, Aoi Todo showed up and gave Yuji a second wind. Together, they cornered Mahito using Todo’s clever tactics, and Yuji managed to land Black Flash on Mahito. Yuji and Todo forced him to unlock his true form, fighting on a different level. However, with one last Black Flash, Yuji downed Mahito and sent him whimpering away from Yuji.

Just when everything seemed to be over for Mahito, Suguru Geto suddenly appeared. Mahito cowered behind Geto in the hopes that Geto would help him. Instead, Geto suddenly absorbed Mahito, ending his life. However, this Geto wasn’t the Geto that fought along with Gojo years ago. It was revealed that this person was actually a sorcerer named Kenjaku.

Who was Kenjaku in Jujutsu Kaisen

Kenjaku is an ancient sorcerer; he had lived for at least a thousand years by moving from one body to another. Kenjaku’s true appearance never made an appearance throughout the series. He only showed his “true” form as the brain inside the vessel’s body.

In this particular time, he was using Geto’s body. In the past, he had used multiple bodies as a vessel. He was able to do this because of this innate technique. His technique allowed him to transplant his brain into the head of another person, effectively moving his consciousness.

However, Kenjaku had not been doing this on a whim. His ultimate goal was to optimize cursed energy and see what would happen if it merged with all of humanity. Essentially, he wanted to take humanity to another level using cursed energy.

Kenjaku was well aware of how grandiose his plan was. That’s why he had no hesitation to manipulate the cursed spirits, the US government, and the two girls that Geto had saved.

Come to think of it, why did Kenjaku specifically choose Geto as his vessel? Clearly, Gojo Satoru was already around by the time Geto was alive. If he needed the strongest sorcerer for a vessel, he could’ve gone for Gojo. The answer is in the innate technique that Geto had.

Why Kenjaku Used Suguru Geto’s Body

Kenjaku went for Geto’s body because he wanted to have Geto’s innate technique, the Cursed Spirits Manipulation. An innate technique is a technique that’s exclusive to a family or clan. For instance, Nobara’s Straw Doll Technique, Megumi’s Ten Shadows Technique, and so on.

However, unlike most techniques that give the user a unique ability, Geto’s technique relies on the cursed spirits he consumed. He essentially absorbed the consumed cursed spirits along with their abilities. This is the key reason why Kenjaku had to consume Mahito when he was in Geto’s body.

By consuming Mahito, Kenjaku gained Mahito’s ability to morph the shape of a human’s soul however he liked. This decision wasn’t merely to give him a power-up. Rather, it directly correlates with Kenjaku’s vision for humanity.

As mentioned, Kenjaku absorbed Mahito to gain his ability to transfigure humans. This ability would help Kenjaku in achieving his goal of merging humanity and cursed energy on a mass scale. However, it wasn’t his first attempt.

Previously, Kenjaku had experimented with the human body and cursed energy in the Meiji Era as Noritoshi Kamo. This experiment gave birth to the Death Painting Wombs, a collection of cursed objects created from the mix of human flesh and cursed energy.

Incidentally, the first three Death Painting Wombs were the three brothers that Yuji fought, Choso, Eso, and Kechizu. Choso was also the first one to realize that Geto was actually Kenjaku, who previously inhabited Noritshoshi Kamo’s body. By the end of Jujutsu Kaisen season two, Kenjaku had stepped closer to his goal by absorbing Mahito.

Kenjaku is an important villain throughout the whole series. Jujutsu Kaisen features many characters with unique abilities. But Kenjaku’s particular technique is by far the most eerie ability in the series. Not only that, but his character also never hesitated to use any means to gain an advantage over others. Be it manipulation or betraying his own allies, Kenjaku did it all willingly.

After the ending of the Jujutsu Kaisen anime, Kenjaku becomes the main villain of the following Culling Game arc. Prior to this, it was clear that Kenjaku was a calculated, patient, and intelligent enemy. He was the one who came up with the plan of sealing Gojo Satoru and orchestrated most things that happened in the Shibuya Incident arc.

Despite all that, he met his end at the hands of Yuta Okkotsu before the climactic finale of Jujutsu Kaisen manga. However, his ability to transplant his consciousness is still relevant to the ending. This is because Yuta copied this ability and used Gojo’s body to fight Sukuna. Although his screen time was cut before the ending, he becomes one of Jujutsu Kaisen’s iconic villains.
