Find out about the two endings of Slitterhead as we explain what each of them means, and what finally happens to Julee, Alex, and Hyoki.
Slitterhead has a complex and twisted story that might confuse you even after you finish the game. With jumping around in time loops and playing the entire game’s story in three days, the convoluted narrative can confuse you severely.
There are two endings in Slitterhead, and this article will explain both of them. That said, there are certain conditions you must fulfill before getting the true ending of Slitterhead.
Note: This article contains spoilers regarding the plot of Slitterhead. Proceed with caution.
The Hyoki Conspiracy Explained
Alex starts going on a rampage following the death of Lisa. This is where Night Owl (the original Hyoki) loses all contact with Alex. This is the first indicator of a more sinister plot as well. Alex is freely able to use all of Hyoki’s powers despite not being connected to Night Owl, and this raises several concerns.
It is here that Night Owl embarks on another time loop, but this time in a different timeline. You will find out about the history of the Hyoki in general and how they are related to humans. However, we will leave out this part for you to discover while playing the game.
What is important to know is that there indeed is a second Hyoki named Leopard Head. In this alternate timeline, Night Owl possesses Julee, and they get hold of a device that can seal all the Slitterheads into the time continuum itself. They succeed in this, and their final foe, Alex, remains the only one.
Leopard Head possesses Alex, who is the driving factor behind his rampage, where he kills the same Slitterheads all over again. The ending has much less to do with Slitterheads and more with the two Hyokis themselves.
The Bad Ending of Slitterhead Explained
In this ending, Julee and Alex (or Leopard Head) have one final showdown on a hazy Kowlong Slum rooftop. Julee explains that the Slitterhead threat has been neutralized and that both of them can choose to exit the time loop to end this for good.
However, Alex disagrees. He explains that he was not pleased with how Night Owl and Julee were sympathetic to certain Slitterheads in the past, at times when they did not lose their consciousness. It is unknown whether these are Alex’s own ideals or if Leopard Head is the driving factor.
Leopard Head and Alex try to kill Julee to restrict Night Owl’s possession options. In their attempt, Leopard Head also possesses various civilians to hold back Julee. However, they fail, and the blue light from Alex’s eyes eventually fades. At the same time, an aircraft is seen diving toward her. This implies that Leopard Head possessed the plane’s pilot to crash it into Julee, killing her entirely.
In the aftermath, the following cutscene shows Night Owl floating over Kowlong, looking to start the struggle all over again. For the broader picture, this essentially means that the entire loop starts all over again for Night Owl.
The True Ending of Slitterhead Explained
After you complete the bad ending, you will see a special “Casualty Counter” on the game’s intermission screen. This number indicates the number of civilians who have died during your current playthrough. Here, you will have to go back and replay missions to keep the casualty count as low as possible. Overall, the total number of casualties needs to be 66 or lower to get the true ending of Slitterhead.
If you achieve this target, you will get a special story mission titled “Last Duel RE (2nd Loop).” This plays out exactly the same as the previous ending, with just some minor dialogue changes. It is also revealed here that Night Owl and Leopard Head originate from the same human but have different ideas about the situation. In the final moments when Leopard Head leaves Alex and possesses the plane’s pilot, a special scene happens. Time will slow down, and you will have exactly eight seconds to press a button to also possess a person on the same flight.
Once you make your way to the cockpit, you will find that Leopard Head has already killed the pilot and possessed the other. Your character easily overpowers him, and then the Hyoki goes on to possess a flight attendant to stop you instead. In the struggle, the plane barely misses Julee, and she is finally saved. However, Alex is no longer on the ground and is nowhere to be seen.
In the post-credit scenes, we glimpse Alex getting on his motorcycle and riding off, with the blue glow still emanating from his eyes. The following scene has the message displayed:
“Julee and Alex.
Night Owl and Leopard Head.
And the remaining Slitterheads…
Their battles move into the next era.”
What Does the True Ending of Slitterhead Imply
The true ending of Slitterhead likely implies that both Julee and Alex go on to live, as do their respective Hyokis. The message at the ending scene also signifies that not all Slitterheads are taken care of. Their fate, however, is untold.
With that, Slitterhead comes to an end. The final moments and the ending message can be a cliffhanger. In that case, this might just be the hint of a possible future sequel. Only time will tell if we will see more of the Hyokis, Julee, and Alex in the neon-drenched city of Kowlong.
