Sage, one of the powerful vocations in Square Enix’s Dragon Quest 3 Remake can be unlocked by two methods.
Square Enix’s Dragon Quest 3 Remake features a unique class system with 10 different classes (vocations). They are Hero, Warrior, Mage, Priest, Merchant, Gadabout, Thief, Monster Wrangler, Martial Artist, and Sage. The Hero and Sage vocations stand out as unique among the 10.
There will be a predetermined vocation for your protagonist character, which cannot be changed. But you can change the vocation of your party members from one class to another in between your playthroughs by interacting with Abbot at the Alltrades Abbey.
The Sage is arguably the best vocation after Hero. However, it cannot be assigned by default during character creation. You need to unlock the Sage Vocation, which can be done in two ways in Dragon Quest 3 Remake.

Ways To Unlock Sage Vocation in Dragon Quest 3 Remake
Sage is one of the powerful vocations in Dragon Quest 3 Remake and possesses abundant MP. They combine and use the spells and abilities of both Priest and Mage during battle. Unfortunately, you cannot turn your characters into Sage by the usual method. However, it can be done by the following methods:
1) Using Words of Wisdom Book to Become a Sage
The Words of Wisdom method is the best way to turn your party members into a Sage. Words of Wisdom is an extremely rare item that allows you to turn your character class into Sage. However, you can use it only once. Changing a Priest or Mage into a Sage becomes extremely useful as you already share some abilities. Use the Words of Wisdom Book at the Alltrades Abbey to instantly change your party member’s vocation to Sage.
Tower of Transcendence Words of Wisdom Location
You can find a Words of Wisdom book in the Tower of Transcendence. It is a dungeon located north of Alltrades Abbey. Locating the Words of Wisdom book is a little trickier in the Tower of Transcendence, as the structures are a bit complex.
Enter the 1st floor and continue the way on your left. Take the upper stairs to find a tightrope tied to the other end. Cross the tightrope and use the stairs to get down to the 1st floor. Enter the blue glowing portal to get transported to another section of the tower.
Take the successive stairs until you reach another tightrope. Instead of crossing the path completely, jump down from the rope halfway (marked with a red flag). You will drop onto a collapsed roof. Jump through the hole in the roof and head downstairs. Now take the stairs to your right to arrive at a small room with a chest. Opening the chest rewards you with the invaluable Words of Wisdom Book.
2) Turning a Gadabout Into Sage
Another way to turn your character into a Sage is the Gadabout method. Gadabout is probably the weakest and least useful class in Dragon Quest 3 Remake. Leveling them up is a challenging process. However, if you manage to level them up to 20, interact with Abbot to turn them into a Sage.
This method is considered easier compared to the Words of Wisdom method. However, the drawback of this method is that the Sage turned from Gadabout has weaker stats.
Your character must be level 20 or higher to change the vocation. Changing a vocation to a newer one results in starting a new job at level 1. However, all the abilities and spells you learned will be retained, and half of your stats will be carried over to the new class.
