Explore the four Jujutsu Kaisen characters who came the closest to defeating Ryomen Sukuna, and four characters who came nowhere near.
Ryomen Sukuna was renowned throughout history as the undisputed King of Curses, and in the Shinjuku Showdown arc of the Jujutsu Kaisen manga, he did justice to this name. It all started with the climactic showdown between Satoru Gojo and Ryomen Sukuna, which saw the Strongest Sorcerer of Today battling the Strongest Sorcerer in History. Unfortunately, this highly anticipated battle ended with Gojo’s untimely demise. However, it led to the whole cast of Jujutsu Kaisen characters immediately jumping onto the battlefield to put an end to the King of Curses once and for all.
4 Jujutsu Kaisen Characters Who Almost Defeated Ryomen Sukuna
Almost immediately after Satoru Gojo met his end, the Jujutsu Tech sorcerers wasted no time in actively participating in the battlefield. From thereon, a chaotic battle ensued, which saw every character, from the likes of Atsuya Kusakabe and Nobara Kugisaki to Yuta Okkotsu and Yuji Itadori, giving it their all to bring down the King of Curses. However, throughout the battle, there were some characters who were closer to defeating Sukuna than others. With that said, let us take a look at the 4 Jujutsu Kaisen characters who came the closest to bringing down Sukuna:
1) Satoru Gojo
Satoru Gojo is the one character who came closest to defeating Ryomen Sukuna at his strongest. Even though Gojo failed to put down Sukuna during their monumental fight, the King of Curses felt the effects of Gojo’s attacks throughout the rest of his battle. It was primarily due to the damage done to Sukuna’s body by Gojo, that the rest of the Jujutsu Kaisen characters were able to defeat the King of Curses.
It should also be mentioned that Gojo had to face not only Sukuna in their fight but also the two strongest creatures of the Ten Shadows technique—Mahoraga and Agito. Despite the odds being stacked heavily against him, Gojo was not only successful in decimating both Mahoraga and Agito but almost brought down Sukuna with his final Hollow Purple attack.
2) Yuta Okkotsu
Yuta Okkotsu is another character who, other than Gojo, had a significant role in Sukuna’s demise. Prior to the fight, Yuta and his Jujutsu Tech allies developed a series of contingency plans, which eventually played a vital role in their victory.
After taking out Kenjaku with a sneak attack, Yuta rejoined his allies in the battle against Sukuna, where he displayed the full power of his Domain Expansion: Authentic Mutual Love. Inside his Domain, Yuta went toe-to-toe against Sukuna alongside Yuji. Later on in the battle, Yuta risked his life by taking control of Gojo’s corpse with Kenjaku’s cursed technique and was able to inflict a great deal of damage to the King of Curses.
3) Maki Zen’in
Maki Zen’in going up against Sukuna is a fight many fans have been anticipating for a long time. Her fight against Sukuna took place immediately after Yuta and Yuji failed to bring him down. Following the collapse of Yuta’s Domain, Maki appeared behind Sukuna and stabbed him through the heart. This attack left a wound that Sukuna found difficult to heal, especially due to the after-effects of his battle against Satoru Gojo.
The fight that ensued saw Maki put on an impressive display of strength and skill, pushing Sukuna back with her sheer power. She also showcased tremendous endurance, taking on two Black Flashes and a slashing attack at point-blank range.
4) Hiromi Higuruma
During his battle against Ryomen Sukuna, Hiromi Higuruma showcased potential that rivaled even the likes of Satoru Gojo. Apart from this, Higuruma’s Executioner’s Sword gave him the ability to kill anything with a single blow. Therefore, he was one of the few characters fans considered to have a strong chance of killing Sukuna.
While Higuruma failed to kill Sukuna in the end, he displayed incredible growth during the fight. He even managed to learn Reverse Cursed Technique after having his arms cut off and was almost successful in wiping out Sukuna from existence after stabbing him with the Executioner’s Sword. Unfortunately, Sukuna managed to outmaneuver him and landed a devastating attack on Higuruma, which took him out of the fight.
4 Jujutsu Kaisen Characters Who Never Stood a Chance Against Ryomen Sukuna
Although the battle against Ryomen Sukuna saw every character give it their absolute best, there were some characters who did not have what it takes to go up against the King of Curses. This could be attributed to their skill and power level or lack thereof and hence they were disposed of quite easily by Sukuna. With that said, let us take a look at the 4 Jujutsu Kaisen characters who never stood a chance against Sukuna:
1) Hajime Kashimo
Hajime Kashimo’s appearance and subsequent battles in the Culling Game arc hyped him up as one of the many favorites to bring down Sukuna. His brief fight against Sukuna initially brought people’s hopes up that he may actually be the one to finish off the King of Curses, given the fact that Kashimo finally resorted to using his Mythical Beast Amber technique.
However, their hopes were squandered pretty quickly when Sukuna transformed into his Heian Era body and finished off Kashimo with the World-Bisecting Slash that killed Gojo. What’s worse is the fact that the majority of the Jujutsu Kaisen fanbase ridiculed Kashimo after his poor performance in his battle against Sukuna.
2) Takuma Ino
Takuma Ino was one of the few characters who was on standby for most of the battle. Although he played a supporting role in the final moments of the fight, he could not hold a candle to Sukuna after coming face-to-face with him.
While it was obvious that Takuma’s power level was nowhere near Sukuna’s, he remains as one of the many characters who shouldn’t have even tried going up against the King of Curses.
3) Larue
Although Larue did not have many appearances in the series, he did leave an impression on fans with his appearance in the Shinjuku Showdown arc. After Sukuna was no longer able to use his Domain, Larue joined the fight alongside Miguel.
Larue did not get much screen time during the fight, since Sukuna easily took him out with one of his Black Flashes. However, he did manage to prove himself useful in the end, by activating his ability on Sukuna, which allowed Yuji to land a devastating Black Flash on him.
4) Miguel
Miguel had an impressive showing against Sukuna during the Shinjuku Showdown arc. He not only managed to evade his slashes using his cursed technique, but he was even able to land a few solid hits on the King of Curses.
Ultimately, he had to quickly withdraw from the battle when Sukuna started gaining momentum after landing a Black Flash on Larue. That said, considering the abilities Sukuna displayed later in the battle, its doubtful that Miguel could have done any significant damage to Sukuna in the final moments of the battle.
Conclusion
The final battle against Ryomen Sukuna was undoubtedly the most enthralling part of the manga. The above list showcases the characters who got closest to defeating the undisputed King of Curses, as well as the characters who never stood a chance of defeating him.
Although some may argue against Yuji Itadori’s exception from the former section of the list, it’s important to note that he landed the finishing blow on Sukuna, who was already exhausted from his long battle against the Jujutsu Tech sorcerers.
We can consider Yuji as the one who finished what Gojo started, and that too, with the help of almost every Jujutsu Kaisen character. While he was certainly powerful enough to defeat an exhausted Sukuna, he could do so because of everyone’s effort.
