These are the embodiment of humanity’s ancient fears. Get to know the Primal Devils in Chainsaw Man and their story.
Devils in Chainsaw Man come from the very concept of human fear. The stronger the fear of something among people is, the stronger the devil who manifests from it. It is a core aspect of the whole Chainsaw Man series.
So, based on this logic, there are bound to be devils who emerged back when humans first learned about fear. These are the Primal Devils. They are devils who have lived so long and have accumulated strength beyond what the current devils can even imagine.
However, all of these devils have a curious relationship with the Chainsaw Devil. Let’s go over their origins, identities, and what connects them to the Chainsaw Devil.
The Primal Devils Origin in Chainsaw Man
Although the Primal Devils are immensely powerful, they are limited to hell. All the devils that appeared on Earth have died at least once in hell, thus they’ve gone through reincarnation. However, these Primal Devils never died once. However, it doesn’t stop them from making contracts with whoever meets them.
Due to being so ancient, they have transcended the typical devil and fiend form. As the manifestation of the most inherent fear in humanity, these Primal Devils would send others running just by showing up. The only instance of a Primal Devil emerging on Earth is when the Falling Devil came at the Famine Devil’s request.
These Primal Devils played a big role in Chainsaw Man Part 2 manga. They’re part of the Nostradamus Prophecy that would fall in July 1999 of the series’ timeline. Currently, four Primal Devils have been shown or named in the series. They are the Falling Devil, the Aging Devil, the Darkness Devil, and the oldest of them all, the Death Devil.
The Four Primal Devils in Chainsaw Man
The four Primal Devils in Chainsaw Man are manifestations of humanity’s lifelong fear. Here are the Primal Devils who made their appearance or were mentioned in the manga.
The Falling Devil
Every human might have an eerie fear of falling down from high places. The commonality of this fear makes the Falling Devil a notable adversary in the series. As mentioned before, the Falling Devil came to Earth per the Famine Devil’s request. Although, on paper, the Falling Devil should be the one in command, she played right into the Famine Devil’s manipulation.
Ironically, the Falling Devil’s abilities are tied to the theme of manipulation. It could forcefully instill thoughts and suggestions in a number of people and make them obey her bidding. The Falling Devil used this power when she first appeared on Earth and was in need of an avatar. To do so, it forced an entire apartment building to jump off the roof and make a body from their corpses.
The Aging Devil
Similar to the Falling Devil, the Aging Devil hailed from hell as an embodiment of the fear of old age. The fear that comes from growing old and facing mortality is one of the most prominent among humanity. The Aging Devil doesn’t take human life as something precious. Furthermore, it detests the concept of youth itself.
Interestingly, the Aging Devil doesn’t have a sense of self-preservation and would gladly give its life for the right price. It allowed itself to be consumed by the Chainsaw Devil. However, the Aging Devil asked for a sacrifice of 10,000 Japanese children. This sacrifice, aside from being a testament to how evil the Aging Devil is, would also tear the balance of the universe. The concept of aging itself would be gone.
The Darkness Devil
Possibly the most unsettling of the Primal Devils, the Darkness Devil symbolizes the fear of darkness itself. Fearing both darkness and this devil is understandable, considering what this devil could do.
As the embodiment of darkness, it could manipulate darkness itself to be whatever it wanted. This ability becomes even more dangerous considering that it’s hostile toward anything, especially the Chainsaw Devil. The Darkness Devil is also silent most of the time, not exhibiting any form of communication. However, it still can hold contracts if someone is willing to do so.
The Death Devil
As the manifestation of the fear of death itself, the Death Devil holds immense power when compared to the others. This is the devil that someone has to fear aside from the concept she symbolizes herself. The power comes from the human fear of death. Since almost everyone has this fear, the Death Devil reigns as the strongest devil to ever exist.
However, not much is known about the Death Devil. She was mentioned to be a part of the Nostradamus Prophecy and eventually would come in July 1999 to bring the end of the world. But, it seems Chainsaw Man fans have to wait for further reveals in the manga.
How Powerful Are the Primal Devils
The Primal Devils are the literal concept of the most prominent and oldest fears in humanity. They harbor tremendous power as devils. Unlike other devils who could only bring havoc on a smaller scale, the world would be shaken the moment a Primal Devil emerged.
However, there is one thing about the relationship between these Primal Devils and the Chainsaw Devil. Interestingly, not all of them hold the same hostility toward the Chainsaw Devil. But, once a devil is eaten by him, its existence would cease and the devil would not go through reincarnation.
Can Chainsaw Man Defeat a Primal Devil
In theory, all devils that the Chainsaw Devil eats would not be reincarnated, hence ceasing to exist altogether. So, if Chainsaw Man defeats the Primal Devils, there is a possibility of a shift in the concepts that are feared by humans.
It’s not like the Chainsaw Devil isn’t capable of standing its ground against overwhelming enemies. In the past, the Chainsaw Devil fought off the Four Horsemen in hell.
The Four Horsemen were a group of immensely powerful devils who took the form of women. The members were the War Devil, the Famine Devil, the Death Devil, and the Control Devil. In fact, this fight was the very reason why the Control Devil was looking for the Chainsaw Devil in the form of Makima.
Conclusion
The Primal Devils in Chainsaw Man are overarching antagonists in the story. However, much of their story is still in progress, especially considering the Death Devil hasn’t made any appearance. The plot of the manga is likely to touch the Primal Devils once more when the Nostradamus Prophecy comes to fruition.
