Dragon Age: The Veilguard sends you on an adventure across the magical Thedas as you and your companions arm yourselves against the rise of a menacing evil entity. With immersive graphics, many places to explore, and a detailed combat system, Dragon Age Veilguard is a treat for fans of action RPGs.
However, even the massive 80+ hour playthrough time of this wonderful game will come to an end at some point. Are you an avid fan of Dragon Age: The Veilguard and looking for similar titles? If you also happen to have a Nintendo Switch, here are seven games that can provide you with a thrill similar to that of Dragon Age: Veilguard, on the go:
1. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
You cannot have a conversation about the Nintendo Switch and RPGs without mentioning the Legend of Zelda franchise. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild takes you on an adventure across Hyrule. Just like Thedas has many interesting locations for you to visit, like Arlathan Forest, The Grand Necropolis, and Hossberg Wetlands, Hyrule also boasts unique places with distinct geographical features.
Gerudo Desert, Akkala Highlands, and Faron have loot, vegetation, and monsters that the mighty Link can explore as he aims to be strong enough to defeat the ultimate Calamity Ganon. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild does not have companions like Dragon Age: The Veilguard, but that does not take away from any of the fun.
2. Persona 5 Royal
If you are a fan of RPGs and Japanese culture, you will hit the jackpot with Persona 5 Royal. This game combines the intricate progression of RPGs with modern-day Tokyo city. You will be able to explore mundane metro stations and fight magical monsters in the same game.
In this game, you are a falsely accused Japanese school student named Joker and on probation. You and your friends awaken special powers, which you use to fight supernatural monsters. Skills range from Physical, Magical, Healing, Support, and many more.
Persona 5 Royal features companions. Joker and his friends take on the role of vigilantes—leading the lives of students and fighting monsters simultaneously. Note that this game is turn-based, unlike Dragon Age: The Veilguard. However, the story is fantastic. The modern setting of the RPG is indeed a breath of fresh air if you are bored of medieval settings.
Whether you take down your enemies with the devastating Flash Bomb physical attack or you choose to inflict the magical, nuclear attack Mafrei, Persona 5 Royal will keep you glued to your portable console for hours at a stretch.
3. Fire Emblem Warriors
Fire Emblem Warriors is much more compact than The Veilguard, having a playthrough time of about 20 hours. Additionally, it promises a lot more frequent combat. Here too, teamwork plays a key role, as you clash and slash through the map.
The story is not as immersive; not much of even the Fire Emblem Universe has been utilized. The game has a unique mechanism called the weapons triangle, a Rock-Paper-Scissors-styled advantage/disadvantage interaction system among the three core martial arts weapons in the game. However, combat fans would enjoy the weapons triangle and the constant fights of Fire Emblem Warriors.
4. Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate
As the suffix “Ultimate” in the name suggests, Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate is an expanded rework of the Monster Hunter Generations on Nintendo 3DS, released in 2016. The name is self-explanatory—you go on adventures across a map and hunt scaly monsters, ranging from the fierce aerial predator Rathalos to the Elder Dragon Amatsu. This game will serve you for nearly 100 hours.
5. Bastion
Bastion is our first post-apocalyptic indie title on the list. It is also the first game on the list that boasts an isometric camera view. Waking up in a post-apocalyptic world may not be a unique premise, but what sets this game apart is the unfolding of the story. An unseen narrator depicts the moves of the main character, Kid, as he explores the Bastion.
Do note that the game has a six-hour main quest, and you can complete the full game in about 20 hours.
6. Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana
Taking place in the mysterious and deserted Isle of Seiren, Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana takes you and your companions on a perilous journey followed by a shipwreck. You play the main character, Adol. The survivors of the shipwreck are pitted against monsters, ranging from the wold-like Worgle to the apex predator Velgyashark, on this enigmatic island while rescuing castaways. The game eventually unfolds the many mysteries of Seiren, which is a wonderful payoff.
7. Portal Knights
This game arguably contains the most calming audio of all the entries in the list. In the universe of Portal Knights, a calamity named The Fracture hits the world and tears the ground into islands. Portals enable travel among the islands, but they have been out of commission for a long time. The main character sets out on a journey to activate them. You can design the main character to your liking and go on a unique island-hopping experience.

While the Nintendo Switch may not provide you with as refined and high-quality graphics as a PC, you will have the freedom to enjoy these exhilarating titles almost anywhere—be it from the comfort of your couch, the bench of a busy airport, or even during a flight.
