Minecraft, the name itself feels like a brand. It defines the Sandbox genre and familiarizes the concept of crafting and building with blocks. Developed and published by Mojang Studios in 2011, Minecraft still stands as the best-selling game of all time with over 300 million copies sold as of 2024. Rockstar Games’ Grand Theft Auto V stays next on the line by selling over 200 million copies.

With over 170 million monthly active players, the fanbase of Minecraft shows no signs of slowing down even after 13 years. Many new players are still enjoying the epic sandbox game and they are wondering if Mojang Studios’s Minecraft is free-to-play in 2024.

Unfortunately, Minecraft is not free to play. The Standard version of Minecraft ranges from $19.99 to $29.99 for various platforms, with a mobile version available for $6.99. However, there are several ways to play Minecraft for free, and let’s go through them one by one in this guide.

How to Play Minecraft for Free

Let’s take a look at the various ways you can play Minecraft for free:

Minecraft Classic

Minecraft Classic, the browser-based version of Minecraft, was launched as a free-to-play model in 2019 as a part of the 10th anniversary celebration of the game. You can play the browser game Minecraft Classic for free by visiting the official Minecraft Classic page. It allows you to play and enjoy the earlier build of Minecraft for free without the need to sign up.

However, it has several drawbacks as it is limited to the older version. It lacks the new features from the modern updates. Moreover, you cannot save your progress as your playthrough will completely vanish once the browser closes. Although you can play with your friends by sharing the link, there is no multiplayer feature beyond that.

Minecraft Free Trial

One of the obvious free methods is the free trial. The Minecraft free trial version is available for Windows, Android, and PlayStation 5, and the Minecraft: Java Edition free trial is available for Windows, Mac, and Linux.

The free trial lets you enjoy the original Minecraft content and try out all the features with a specific time limit. The trial length varies based on the platforms you are using. However, the average trial length ranges from 90-100 minutes and approximately five in-game days.

Xbox Game Pass

Xbox Game Pass owners can enjoy the full version of Minecraft for free. Get the original Minecraft experience and its full features with a Game Pass subscription on Xbox. This is not exactly free (you need to pay for an Xbox Game Pass subscription). Additionally, you can enjoy Minecraft for free with an existing Game Pass subscription plan.

If you already have an existing Game Pass subscription or planning to get one to explore the Game Pass library, then you will get Minecraft as a ‘free’ bonus addition as a part of the subscription.

Minecraft: Education

Minecraft: Education, one of the versions of the original Minecraft can be accessed and played for free by students. Designed specifically for educational purposes, this version assists students in learning through gameplay using educational tools. The Minecraft: Education version allows the students to explore and experience the world of Minecraft with several restricted features such as multiplayer options.

Albeit free for students, schools should purchase the right licenses. As entirely focuses on learning and education purposes, it can’t be accessed outside of the educational institutions’ limits. Minecraft: Education has a free trial version with limited access.
