Black Myth Wukong’s latest update came as a surprise to most players. While the game did receive plenty of updates following its release, most of them were focused on fixing the game’s various technical and stability-related issues, instead of adding new content.

However, with the latest update, version 1.0.12.16581, developer Game Science has added an entirely new game mode to Black Myth Wukong. The aptly named Challenge mode is something that fans have been asking for since the game’s original release back in August. The Challenge mode is essentially a Boss Rush/ Gauntlet mode, with its own set of rewards and modifiers.

The Challenge mode is quite similar to the Gauntlets in Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice. However, between the two games, there are some key differences, like additional modifiers, difficulty presets, and more. Here’s everything you need to know about Black Myth Wukong’s new Challenge mode.

How To Access the Challenge Mode in Black Myth Wukong

The Challenge mode is available from the Keeper’s Shrine. However, some prerequisites need to be met before you can use the Challenge mode to its fullest.

Firstly, the Challenge mode only features the named bosses and not the mini-bosses. Meaning, bosses like Black Bear Guai, Hundred-Eyed Daoist, Duskveil, Yaksha King, Great Sage’s Broken Shell, Erlang, Sacred Divinity, etc., are the ones that will be available in the Challenge mode. However, bosses like the Bull Vanguard or the several different Stone Vanguard variants won’t be in the boss rush list. It should be noted that optional bosses are included in the Challenge mode.

Furthermore, before you can fight a boss in the Challenge mode, you need to unlock them in the main story. Similarly to Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice’s Gauntlet mode, the bosses in the Challenge mode show up as soon as you fight and defeat them in the main story. However, the Challenge mode’s Gauntlet only unlocks after you’ve completed the game at least once. That said, here’s how you can access the Challenge mode in Black Myth: Wukong:

  • Head to a Keeper’s Shrine in any of the chapters.
  • Navigate to the Challenge tab.
  • Choose between Return of Rivals and Gauntlet of Legends.

Black Myth: Wukong Challenge Modes and Rewards

The Return of Rivals mode is a straightforward boss replay mode. In this mode, you can choose between any of the opponents that you have defeated previously and battle them. There are three difficulty presets to choose from for each of the bosses. At the end of the boss fight, you will be greeted by a summary screen showcasing your stats and the time it took you to defeat the boss. However, there are no rewards in this mode. The Gauntlet of Legends is much more like a proper boss rush gauntlet. You essentially fight a set of bosses back to back, without any means to save your progress.

Completing the gauntlet is how you unlock the new combat equipment and outfits that have been added to the game with the latest update. This is basically similar to how in Sekiro, you could unlock new skins as well as combat arts like the Sakura Dance by completing the gauntlet.
